ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS:

Issue: Windows Vista and Intel Macintosh

Solution: Cursory testing performed on Windows Vista and Intel Macintosh machines have not revealed any issues.

"Our customer base uses a wide variety of operating systems and applications, and our software must be developed to be used on some lower end systems to meet customer needs.  Because of this, we cannot guarantee that our software will always work as expected as new operating systems and other applications are developed.  We encourage you to give our products a 'test drive' on any new system you plan to implement.  If you are not satisfied with the performance of our product, we will do our best to deliver a compatible product to you in a timely manner or refund your money."

Issue: Here is the list of teacher reports for the new program titled “Treasures New Adventures with Buggles and Beezy”.  OR

Guidelines for teacher reports.  OR

I’m not getting the results I expected. OR

I’m not getting any results.

Solution: Teacher reports are available in Teacher Utilities under Teacher Tools and there are 10 of them.  Those reports are:

     1.       Class Roster.

     2.       Class Summary Report (lessons).

     3.       Detailed Report by Student.

     4.       Lessons Attempted by Student.

     5.       Lessons Completed Summary Report.

     6.       Practice Follow-up Report.

     7.       Student Scoring Statistics Report.

     8.       Student Summary Report (lessons).

     9.       Summary Report by Lesson.

   10.      Summary Report by Student.

In order for a student to appear on any type of Summary report (there are 5 of them) the student must meet two criteria:

1.       They must have successfully completed all the activities of one level of a lesson.

2.       They must have scored 88% or higher (this is what is meant by the term “successfully”) on every activity for that level.

If you aren’t getting any results or they aren’t the results you expected make sure the report doesn’t require you to choose a date or date range.  If it does then try different date(s). If it is a Summary report make sure the student met both criteria listed above because if they didn’t then they won’t appear on the report.

Issue: Director Player script errors OR

The program is freezing.  OR

I’m experiencing black screens.  OR

I’m receiving illegal operation errors.

Solution: Check to see how many simultaneous users are there using the program at the time the error occurs.  If it is more then 10 then the program will generate this error.

The network version of both the Adventures with Buggles program and the New Adventures with Buggles and Beezy program has been re-classified as a classroom version. There is no longer a network version of either program.

The program was only intended for a maximum number of 10 simultaneous users.  It was not intended to be run from a school’s LAN; rather it was intended to be run in a peer-to-peer situation in a classroom.  If the program is installed to the school’s LAN keep in mind that the maximum number of simultaneous users across the LAN is 10 total and not 10 per classroom.

If you determine that the maximum number of simultaneous users is not exceeding 10 at any point in time then try to determine if the database has become corrupted.  One way to test whether the database has become corrupted is to see if just 1 or 2 people can log into the program and run it.  If they can log in then the database isn’t corrupted.  If not even one person can log into the program to use it then more then likely the database has become corrupted.  If the database has become corrupted, and there is a back-up, then replace the ADMNDATA and RSLTDATA folders from back-up.  If there is no back-up, and you’re certain the database is corrupt, then unfortunately the program will need to be re-installed.

If the maximum number of simultaneous users isn’t being exceeded and the database isn’t corrupted then check to see if the Director Player script error is being caused by insufficient rights. One way to test rights is to have the computer tech log onto a student workstation as a network administrator and then try logging into the program as one of the students.  If they can log into the program as a student without getting the error then the error is being caused by insufficient rights for students.

One other thing we have seen cause this issue on rare occasions is generic student network logins.  If you’ve exhausted all other possibilities and if all student’s use the same generic login to the network that may cause this problem.  A way to test whether or not this is the issue is to create unique network logins for each student, in one class (as a test), and then have them log onto their workstation with their unique network login.  Then have them try logging into the program.

Issue:  PC workstation installer.exe error   OR

Macromedia projector error while installing workstation

Solution: We have only seen this error occur with the new program titled “Treasures New Adventures with Buggles and Beezy This is a known issue and there is not a fix for it.

Here is the workaround:

1.       Make a copy of both the ADMNDATA and RSLTDATA folders, in the MMHBuggles folder on the server, and place those copies somewhere. Then delete the ADMNDATA and RSLTDATA folders from the MMHBuggles folder on the server because you have a copy.

2.       Next insert the Treasures New Adventures with Buggles and Beezy K-1 or 2-3 network installation CD-ROM (it doesn’t matter which grade level).

3.       Open the CD and open the Programs folder.

4.       Copy the ADMNDATA and RSLTDATA folders from the CD to the MMHBuggles folder on the server.

5.       Now install the workstations.

6.       After you are finished installing the workstations then delete the ADMNDATA and RSLTDATA folders that you copied from the network installation CD in step 4.

7.       Now copy back in your ADMNDATA and RSLTDATA folders that you made a copy of in    step 1.

Issue:  How to import students.  NOTE: this tool is only available in the program titled “Treasures New Adventures with Buggles and Beezy”.

Solution: The tool is set up such that each teacher imports their students into their own class.

Here is how to create the needed text file.

  1.        Open Notepad, Word, Simpletext or basically any program that will allow you to create a text file.

  2.        On line one type the student’s first name, then insert the pipe character (symbol above the back slash symbol) and then type their last name.  For example, John|Smith.

  3.        Place each additional student on a seperate line, so if you have 20 students you will have 20 lines with one student name on each line.

  4.        Example:

  5.        John|Smith

  6.        Terry|Johnson

  7.        Mark|Thompson

  8.        When you are done with the file go to File and Save As.  Ensure file type Text(.txt) is chosen.

  9.        Name the file and make sure you know where you are saving the file.  Click Save.

Here are the instructions to get to the import tool as a teacher.

1.         Launch Teacher Utilities.

2.         Click Teacher Tools.

3.         Choose a teacher and click OK. Enter password and click OK.

4.         Choose Manage Class/Students Wizard button.

5.         Choose a class and click Next.

6.         Click the Import button.

7.         A window titled Open will open.

8.         Browse to where you saved your text file and click on the file and click the Open button.

9.         Depending on how large your list is it may take quite a few seconds.

10.         When it is finished the list of students will appear in this class.

If the school decides to import all student names at once they will be importing all students into one teacher’s class. To get each student placed into the correct class the administrator of the Adventures with Buggles and Beezy program would need to:

1.       Start the Teacher Utilities program and log into the Management Tools section.

2.       Click the Student button

3.       Choose the teacher and class under which all the student names where imported.

4.       Choose a student and click the Move button.

NOTE: you can only move 1 student at a time.

5.       A Move Student window will open. Click in the box that shows the teacher name (there isn’t a black dropdown arrow) and click on the teacher.

6.       A list of that teacher’s classes will appear.

7.       Choose the class and click OK.

8.       Repeat steps 3-7 for each student.

NOTE: After you get all your teachers/classes/students entered into the database we suggest you do an immediate backup.  There is a database backup tool available in the teacher utility program.  Click here for instructions.

Issue: How to back up the database.  NOTE: this tool is only available in the new program titled “Treasures New Adventures with Buggles and Beezy program”.

Solution: Here are the steps for backing up the database:

1.       Start the Teacher Utility program.

2.       Log into Management Tools.

3.       Click the Tools Button.

4.       Click the Database Backup button.

5.       A window named “Please select a folder to backup to” will open.  Browse to the location where you want to save this backup. Click OK.

6.       When you are finished you can quit the Teacher Utility program.

What that does is make a copy of your current ADMNDATA and RSLTDATA folders and it puts those copies into a dated folder.  For example if you clicked that button and the day’s date was November 1st 2007 it would make a folder named Admin-Backup-11-01-2007 and inside that folder will be a copy of your ADMNDATA and RSLTDATA folders from that day.

Issue: How to approve a student that has self-registered.  OR

A student isn’t showing in my class list in teacher utilities but their name appears on the class log-in screen

Solution: When a student self-registers their name will immediately appear in the class list on the student log-in screen and they will be able to start using the program. However their name will not appear in the teacher’s class list in teacher utilities until the teacher approves the student.  Here are those steps:

1.       Start teacher utilities and go to Teacher Tools.

2.       Choose your name and log-in

3.       Click Manage Class/Students Wizard.

4.       Choose your class.

5.       Highlight the class the student self-registered in and click Next.

6.       It doesn’t matter which student name is highlighted just click Next.

Now you have the options to Approve, Reassign or Delete any students that self-registered in that class.

Issue: Invalid page fault error that references a fileio.x32 file.

Solution: We have only seen this error occur with the original program named “Adventures with Buggles”. There is not a fix for this issue. The workaround is to uninstall it from the network, install it on each workstation and run it as standalone. By doing this there won't be a universal management system however it does eliminate the error message and allows you to use the program instead of returning it.

Here are those instructions:

Uninstalling workstations

  1.        On the network open the McGraw-Hill School folder, then open the Phonics folder.

  2.        Click on PC workstation uninstaller.  A window will appear and ask you to locate the Phonics K-1 file or Phonics 2-3 file, which is located on the workstations hard drive.  If you have K-1 and 2-3 they have to be uninstalled one at a time.

  3.        Click Browse.

  4.        Select the appropriate folders until the Phonics K-1 or 2-3 folder is located on the workstation's local hard drive. By default the location should be C:\McGraw Hill School\Phonics\ Phonics K-1 (or Phonics 2-3)

  5.        Open the appropriate Phonics K-1 or Phonics 2-3 folder.

  6.        You will see a Phonics K-1 or 2-3 file with a movie projector icon.

  7.        Double-click the file and you will be taken to the uninstall screen listing the browsed path.

  8.        Click uninstall.

  9.        Repeat this process at each workstation.

Installing server files to each workstation

  1.        Insert Adventures with Buggles Network installation CD-ROM.

  2.        Click on the K-1 or 2-3 Server Setup file.

  3.        Click Next and Next again to accept the default path.

  4.        Follow the onscreen instructions. If you have other grade levels to install insert that Network CD-ROM and repeat the above steps.

  5.        Repeat this process at each workstation.

Installing workstation files to each workstation

1.       Click on My Computer and open the C drive.

2.       Open the McGraw-Hill School folder, open the Phonics folder and click on the PC workstation installer.

3.       Choose the grades you want to install.

4.       Click Next to accept the default installation location.

5.       Go to next workstation and repeat.

Installation of Adventures with Buggles Network version as standalone is complete.

If you have already entered teacher, class and student information into the program you don’t want to reenter them on each workstation.  To copy the database from the network to each workstation:

  1.        From a workstation browse to the McGraw-Hill School folder on the network.

  2.        Open the Phonics folder.

  3.        Copy the Admndata folder and then close these windows.

  4.        Browse to the workstation’s hard drive and open the McGraw-Hill School folder.

  5.        Open the Phonics folder.  This Admndata folder doesn’t contain teacher, class and student info.

  6.        Paste the Admndata folder from the network. You will get a message asking whether to overwrite the existing file, click YES.

  7.        Browse to the McGraw hill School folder on the network.

  8.        Open the Phonics folder and copy the Rsltdata folder.

  9.        Close these windows.

10.        Browse to the workstation’s hard drive and open the McGraw Hill School folder.

11.        Open the Phonics folder.

12.        Paste the Rsltdata folder. You will get a message asking whether to overwrite the existing file, click YES.

13.        Repeat this process at each workstation.

Issue: Getting error that refers to XOBGLU.dll files

Solution:  This worked for some customers:

1.       Log onto the workstation as an administrator and install the program.

2.       Open the WinNT or Windows folder (whichever is listed in the error) on the workstation’s hard drive.

3.       Two XOBGLU.dll files should be in this folder. Copy these two files to the desktop, or to a floppy disk.

4.       Exit our software program, which erases those two files from the WINNT, or Windows, folder.

5.       Go to where you copied the two files and copy the two files back into the WINNT, or Windows folder.

6.       Mark the 2 files as Read Only. Now the 2 files should stay in the folder and be there when running the program as a restricted user.

If the workaround doesn’t work, the only other solution is to make all users of this program Powerusers.

If customer can’t get the two files, there are copies in the Files to Email folder to send them.

Issue:  -34 error message. Usually refers to a path similar to can't open file C:\admin\`temp etc... and ends with -34

Solution: We have only seen this error occur with the original program named “Adventures with Buggles”.  This can happen on Windows 2000 and XP. Set the Adventures with Buggles program to run in Windows 95 compatibility.

The ways to do this depend on if you have Windows 2000 or XP. For Windows XP click here.

On Windows 2000 first the compatibility mode needs to enabled.  In order to be enabled Service Pack 2 or higher needs to be installed and enabled by someone with administrator privileges.  Here are those instructions.

1. Log onto the workstation as Administrator.

2. Click Start, and then click Run.

3. In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK.   %SystemRoot% is the drive and folder in which Windows is installed and there is a space between 32 and the first %.

regsvr32 %systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dll

4. You should get a message stating it was successful.

Next use the Windows XP instructions below to set the program to run in Windows 95 compatibility.

Windows XP instructions:

1. Click on Start, Programs, McGraw-Hill School and go to Phonics Network.

2. Right click on Phonics K-1 or 2-3.

3. Left click on Properties.

  1.        Log into Teacher Utilities as a teacher and click on Teacher Tools.

  2.        Choose the class that the student is in and then click on the assignment screen.

  3.        Look next to the student’s name. If a lesson is listed then they don’t get the lesson chooser screen because a lesson is already assigned and there is no need to get the lesson chooser screen.

  4.        If the teacher doesn’t want the student to have an assignment then highlight the students name and then click the Clear button at the BOTTOM of the screen.

NOTE:  Individual assignments supercede class assignments.  If the student has an individual assignment it will take precedent over a class assignment.

Issue: Students can’t print

Solution: Make sure the students haven’t been restricted from printing.  To check this log into Teacher Utilities as a teacher, click the class the student is in then click the student who can’t print, and click the Modify button.  To allow students to print make sure there is a checkmark next to “Allow students to print.”

If the option to allow them to print is checked then there must be another reason the students can’t print.

After each step below, try to print.

  1.        If applicable, turn off anti-virus and/or security program.

  2.        Power the printer Off and On again.

  3.        Download the latest printer driver.

  4.        If using a networked printer:

a.                                         Attach the printer directly to the computer.  If it prints, the data is not getting through on the network.

b.                                         Try printing from another computer that uses the same printer.

  5.        Try to print a different file in this program (in case the desired file is corrupt).  You may first need to create a new document/file.

  6.        Open a different program and try to print something.

  7.        In your printer properties/settings check options that deal with DPI (dots per inch), resolution, quality of printing, background printing/spooling etc... Try some different settings with these features. The Advanced button allows you to access these settings.

  8.        Set your Display to 256 colors, on Windows XP you can do it for just this program alone.

  9.        Try a different printer.

10.        Try a different workstation.

If none of the above worked, contact Software Support and provide the results for each step above and the following information:

  1.        What is the printer make and model?

  2.        What, if any, is the error message when trying to print?

  3.        Is the printer networked?

  4.        Are computer ports LPT or USB?

  5.        Have you been able to print from this program before?  If so, what changes have been made on your workstation recently?
