INSTALLATION TIPS:

Windows and Macintosh Network:

Note: Paws and the Management program runs from the local hard drive of each computer, not from the server. The server holds the data for the students in a folder called "results".

1). Open the CD then drag the folder named "Paws Install" to the shared network folder.
2). Go to each workstation, browse through the shared network drive to the "Paws Install" folder.
3). For Windows double click "Paws Workstation Install" and allow the files to be installed to the local workstation drive.
For Mac O.S. 9.x double click "Install Paws Net Classic" and allow the files to be installed to the local workstation drive.
For Mac O.S. X double click "Install Paws Net OSX" and allow the files to be installed to the local workstation drive.

Windows and Mac Site License options:

- Follow the same directions as the network version except drag the "Paws Install" folder to a local hard drive rather than a network drive and then run the installer from there.

- Drag the “Paws Install” folder to a shared network drive and then copy it to each local workstation before running the installer.

Note: Except for the installation application, do not run any of the application files directly from the "Paws Install" folder or the CD. All application files must run from the local hard drive.

Issue: Paws won't allow students to move forward, it just beeps when students try to type.

Solution: This happens if the Caps Lock key is on. Turn the Caps Lock key off and Paws will quit beeping and allow the student to continue working.

Issue: Paws won't allow students to go to all the levels.

Solution: By default, Paws is set to make the students go through the lessons sequentially. They will have to finish all of a particular lesson set before they can move to a higher level lesson. If you would like to make all lessons available then go the management area, choose a class then click modify and then change the lesson order from Linear to Random.

Issue: I'm getting an error "Script error - handler not defined".

Solution: This happens if the StudentFile.txt file becomes corrupt. To get rid of the error, restore this file from the most recent back up.  If there is no back up then delete this file and it will be recreated the next time someone logs in. This file contains all student data and, without a backup, when it recreates then all previous student data will be lost.

Potential Fix 1 - Updated Files Set 1

If the program is installed correctly then try using some updated files for the program. Software Support can send these files in a zipped format via email. Instructions are included.

Notes:

·         These files will perform extra file integrity checks and will automatically backup the StudentFile.txt. The first backup file is named StudentFilebackup.txt and will automatically be used by the program if the StudentFile.txt becomes corrupt.

·         Other backups are made each day the program is run, and are named StudentbakXX.txt (where XX is the day of the month.)

·         If both the StudentFile.txt and StudentFileBackup.txt become corrupt then the customer can search for the last good file, rename the StudentFile.txt to StudentFile.bad, and rename the good file to StudentFile.txt so it will be used by the program.

Potential Fix 2 - Updated Files Set 2

Software Support can send these files in a zipped format via email. Instructions are included for these files.

Notes:

·         This fix saves each student’s data to a separate file.

·         When the Teacher logs into the management system, all the data from the separate files is gathered into the StudentFile.txt so the management system will be able to see all current data.

·         Since the management program goes through the extra step of gathering the data, inform the instructor that it may take longer to launch on some networks.

Windows

Issue: Will this program work with Windows 95?

Solution: Windows 95 was not one of the operating systems with which the developers performed quality assurance testing. Cursory testing shows that it does run on a Windows 95 O.S. but we can’t guarantee that all aspects of the program will run in Windows 95.
