  2. Windows 95/98: Click on the START button on the Taskbar and choose the Run option.
  3. Use the drive letter that corresponds to the CD-ROM/Disk drive on your computer. The installation program is configured to copy the software to c:\ExamView on your hard drive. However, you can change this location.
  4. Follow the prompts on the screen to complete the installation process.
  5. Remove the CD-ROM/Disk from the drive when you are finished.

Macintosh:

1.       Insert the CD-ROM (or disk) into your CD-ROM/Disk drive.

2.       Double-click the installation icon to start the program.

3.       Follow the prompts on the screen to complete the installation process.

Examview Player: If you have access to a local area network, it is recommended that you store the online tests on the server.  You can install the player on the server or install it on each individual workstation.  As your students take a test, the player will automatically store their results in the test file itself.  Then, you can simply open the test file to view the results for all of your students.

Note: Students must have read/write access to the network folder that contains the test.

If you decide to install the program on individual workstations, run the ExamView Player setup at each computer.  A separate setup program for the player should be located in the EV Player subfolder on the CD-ROM.

Notes:

  1. To specify the default path where the program looks for tests, set the start-up command as follows — evplay.exe /testpath=path
  2. To turn off the option for students to browse network drives, include / nobrowse in the start-up command.

Issue:  The numbers in the steps that show how to work a problem on the answer key don’t always match the question.

Solution: The answer key now includes the steps to solve the question.  When the question is static, the key will use the numbers in the question (short answer, essay), if the question is generated using an algorithm, then a sample is provided because the numbers change with every iteration of the algorithm (multiple choice).  To disable this option:

1.       Go to the Edit menu.

2.       Choose Preferences.

3.       Choose the Layout tab.

4.       In the “Show On Answer Key” section, uncheck the Notes and Rationale options.

Issue: How can I merge several tests into one test?

Solution: In order to merge tests, the existing saved tests must be converted into question banks. Once each test has been converted to a question bank, a new test can be created from these new question banks. To convert each test file to a question bank file, follow the steps appropriate for your operating system:

Windows:

1.       Open an existing test in ExamView Pro.

2.       Choose Export from the File menu.

3.       Change the “Save as type" setting to "ExamView Question Bank (.bnk)"

4.       Select the appropriate folder where you want the new file to be saved, and make a note of the folder location.

Note: Creating the combined test will be easier if you place all of your question bank files in the same folder.

5.       Type a filename and click "Save."

6.       Repeat 1-5 for each additional test.

Macintosh:

1.       Open an existing test in ExamView Pro.

2.       Highlight "Export" from the File menu.

3.       Choose “As Question Bank” from the Export submenu.

4.       Select the appropriate folder where you want the new file to be saved, and make a note of the folder location so you can find the files later.

Note: Creating the combined test will be easier if you place all of your question bank files in the same folder.

5.       Type a filename and click "Export."

6.       Repeat 1-7 for each additional test.

Issue: Can you insert a GIF image (picture) into a question?

Solution: No. The .gif format is not supported due to patent restrictions. You can, however, open this format on the Macintosh if you have the EasyOpen utility that is built into OS 8.5.

Issue: I tried selecting the MathArt question bank, but it is empty.

Solution: The MathArt folder is not a question bank.  It contains image files that can be used when creating tests.  To add one of these graphics to a test, follow the instructions for inserting graphics, and browse to the MathArt folder for the appropriate book.

Solution:  There are five options you can select for your “font” change. You can select test title, section title, question numbers, answer choices or a new question.

  1. Go to Edit and select Preferences.
  2. Click on the Style tab.
  3. Select the font you wish to use.

Issue: When I reduce the number of answer choice in a matching question, the remaining answers do not match the questions.

Solution: Typically, matching items are in groups of 10 question/answers.  If the answer choices are simply reduced, the program will remove the specified number of answers from the group of 10, leaving the associated questions unchanged.  Please try the following to reduce the number of matching answers so that the questions and remaining answers still match:

1.       From the grouping of 10 questions/answers, highlight and delete the questions you wish to remove from the test.

2.       Double-click on the group of associated answers.  The original group of answers will appear on the top half of the Edit window, and the remaining associated questions will appear on the bottom half of the Edit window.

3.       From the Choices menu, choose a “number” (for example, a-e) that represents the number of remaining questions.  The answers that will remain will not necessarily match the remaining questions.

4.       In the answer table on the top half of the Edit window, adjust the answer choices to match the remaining questions in any order you choose.

5.       In the question table on the bottom half of the Edit window, change the letter in the “ANS” column to ensure the new letter of the answer is paired with its associated question.

6.       When finished, click the Record button to save the changes.

Issue: When I reduce the number of multiple-choice answers to two, the correct answer is taken away. Can this be done?

Solution: There is a way to design your multiple-choice questions to have only two choices. Below are steps for versions 3.0-3.5 and 3.6 or higher. Be sure you have version 3.0 or higher of ExamView (now called ExamView Pro).

Reduce Multiple Choice Answers for versions 3.0-3.5 -  The steps below need to be followed for each multiple-choice question:

  1. Create your test.
  2. Double-click on the first multiple-choice question.
  3. Press and hold down the ALT key on the keyboard for the next two steps.
  4. Click on the drop down menu for Choices and select the number of choices you would like on your test. (Click YES on the warning box that says that you may lose some of your choices.
  5. Release the ALT key and check your question. It should reflect the number of choices you selected as well as the correct answer.

Reduce Multiple Choice Answers for version 3.6 or higher -  This is fully automated and changes ALL multiple choice answers:

  1. Create your test.
  2. Press Ctrl+M simultaneously. (For Mac users, press Apple+M.)
  3. Select the number of answer spaces you would like as well as the type of column when the Adjust Multiple Choice dialog box appears.
  4. Click OK to have ExamView Pro automatically adjust your multiple-choice answers.

Issue: I want my multiple-choice answers to be in one column. Can I do that without editing each question?

Solution: If you have version 3.0 or higher (called ExamView Pro) then there is a universal way to change the multiple-choice columns.

  1. Create a test.
  2. Press Ctrl+M and a dialog box will appear asking how many columns you would like.
  3. Select the number of columns.
  4. Press Enter.
  5. Now your multiple-choice questions are in the format you selected.

Issue: When I scramble my multiple choice answers they are not in order.

Solution: The program is setup to conserve paper. Once the option to conserve paper is turned off, the problem will be corrected. To correct this, follow the steps below:

  1. Click on Edit and choose Preferences.
  2. Choose the Layout tab.  (For newer versions, it is in the Style tab.)
  3. Click Use Columns.
  4. Click Ok.

Issue: What is a bimodal question?

Solution:  A bimodal question is a type of question that can be switched between multiple choice and short answer formats.  Bimodal questions are denoted with a red dot to the left of the question.  To switch a bimodal question between multiple choice and short answer format:

  1. Highlight a bimodal question on the test.
  2. In the toolbar, the Toggle Bimodal button will activate.
  3. Click the Toggle Bimodal button to change between multiple choice and short answer formats.

Issue: How do I use the Calculate Values function?

Solution:  The Calculate Values button and menu options are only available if your test or question bank contains dynamic content.  To determine which questions contain dynamic content, select Question Tags from the View menu.  Any questions that contain dynamic content will be labeled with the calculator icon.  Questions marked with the calculator tag will not necessarily change when you recalculate your test or bank. The variables used in the question may be defined with a single value that does not change, or the dynamic variables may be located in a narrative instead of the question itself.

Note: The Calculate Values function is only available in ExamView Pro 4.0 and higher.

Issue:  Can a test be formatted to look like a state or national test?

Solution:  For ExamView Pro 4.0 or higher there are state and national formats available. The state-specific formats that are available depend on the state abbreviation that is used in the Preferences section.  National formats like ACT, SAT, etc., are also available.

  1. Create a test.
  2. Go to the Test menu and choose Style Gallery.
  3. Choose the format you wish to use and click OK.

Note:  Updates to the Style Gallery can be downloaded from http://www.ExamView.com/support/style_gallery2.htm.

Issue: How do I add questions to a test based on my state standards?

Solution:  In order to make sure the correct standards are displayed (if applicable), first go to the Edit menu, and choose Preferences.  Verify the correct state abbreviation is listed in the State field.  To add questions to a test based on the state standards, please try the following.

1.       Create a new test.

2.       Enter a title and click OK.

3.       Choose a question bank, and click OK.

4.       Go to the Select menu, and choose By Criteria.

5.       In the Select By Criteria windows, click the “I” button next to the State Objective field.

6.       A list of state objectives will appear based on the question bank that was selected in step 3.

7.       Click on a state objective, and click OK.

8.       In the Select By Criteria window, the selected objective will appear in the State Objective field.  In parentheses, the number of available questions that match the criteria will appear.

9.       To the left of these parentheses, enter the number of available questions you wish to add to the test.

10.   Click the Select button to add the questions to the test.

11.   Repeat steps 1-10 to add questions to the test based on a different state standard.

12.   When finished, click Done.

Issue: How do I create a Spanish version of a test?

Solution: Spanish versions of tests can be created in ExamView Pro versions 3.6 or higher. It is important to note that only Glencoe (publisher) prepared banks can be translated to Spanish.

Tests can be created in Spanish, French, German and, of course, English. You can browse to the Banks folder for the chosen language, or create the test in English and translate it to another language.

Creating a Spanish test:

  1. Select the ExamView Pro option of your choice (for example Create a New Test Using the Quick Test Wizard).
  2. Name the test.
  3. Click on the yellow (for Mac it is blue) folder button between the two white rectangles.
  4. Open the Banks folder, and click on the language folder of your choice.
  5. Click Select, and choose the chapters you would like on the test.
  6. Click the Next button.
  7. Select the question types you would like on your test.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Click on the Finish button after previewing your selections.

Note: The above steps will show everything in Spanish. If you would rather create the test in English, ExamView Pro offers a Translate Test feature (for some textbooks). Below are the steps for creating an English test and translating it into Spanish. Again, any changes you make to the questions, or new questions you create, will not translate into Spanish.

Translating a test into Spanish:

  1. Follow the steps listed above, only this time select the English bank (only if you have multiple banks installed).
  2. Click on Test from the Menu bar.
  3. Select Translate Test to Spanish.
  4. Save your test if you have not done so already. ExamView Pro will prompt you to save the test if you have not done so at this point.
  5. Click Save and your test is then translated into Spanish.
  6. Click Save again if you would like to save your new Spanish test.

Note: If you have multiple banks and do not see the correct book’s bank; click here for additional help.

Issue: How do I import a class roster for a LAN-based test?

Solution: It is possible to import a class list but it must be saved as a .txt file and formatted in a specific way.

  1. Identify the file (file name and location) from which you want to import the class roster.
  2. If you import from a text file, change the List files of type setting to Text files (*.txt).  You could, for example, import students from a text file that you created with another program such as a gradebook or spreadsheet program.
  3. The text file must be formatted as follows, with each name on a line by itself, and each field separated by a comma or tab:  last name, first name, ID or full name, ID.

Issue: Only one student can access a LAN-based test at a time.

Solution: There are several possible causes for this issue.  Try the following:

  • Run the Online Test Wizard after creating the test.  Be sure to save the test after running the Wizard. See the issue titled “How do I create an online test.
  • Make sure that students have Read/Write/Modify permissions to the folder on the server where the test resides.

Issue: After a student completes a test over the LAN with the ExamView Player, I am unable to view the results in ExamView Pro.

Solution:  There are four requirements for viewing student test results:

  1. In the Online Test Wizard, Step 1 - if the “Allow access to anyone” option is selected, test results will not be saved.  In order to save results, the “Only students in a particular class may take this test.” option must be selected.  In Step 2 - a class name must be entered, and students must be added to the roster.
  2. Students must have read/write permissions to the shared folder on the server where the test files are located.
  3. At least one student must complete the test via the ExamView Player.
  4. When a teacher attempts to view the test results, they must open the test on the server that the students have been accessing.  If the test was first saved locally then copied to the server, the test results will only be saved to the test on the server.

ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS:  Windows

Issue: Will this program run on Windows NT, ME, 2000, and XP?

Solution: Cursory testing was done for this product on Windows NT, ME, 2000, as well as XP machines, and no problems were detected. The developer officially supports only ExamView Pro 3.6 and higher on Windows XP, since those are the only versions created after Windows XP was released.

Notes:

·         ExamView 3.0 and newer should work on Windows XP.

·         There is a bug in ExamView versions 3.0 – 3.5 when printing with USB printers.  The bug was fixed in ExamView Pro 3.6.

·         The developer has received reports of glitches with ExamView 2.0 on Windows XP.  They cannot troubleshoot these issues and recommend upgrading ExamView to at least version 3.6.

Our customer base uses a wide variety of operating systems and applications and our software must be developed to be used on some lower end systems to meet our customer needs. Because of this, we cannot guarantee that our software will always work as expected as new operating systems and other applications are developed. We encourage you to give our products a ‘test drive’ on any new system you plan to implement. If you are not satisfied with the performance of our products, we will do our best to deliver a compatible product to you in a timely manner or refund your money.

Issue: When I try to install the program an error states “Setup initialization failed.  You must update your operating system.  Error 102.”

Solution: Check to see if the file  _inst16.ex_  is on your disk. If it is not, then contact Software Support for a copy of the file. This is the program’s executable file and the error is caused when the executable is not found.

Issue: When creating a test, I go to EDITàREPLACE FONT, but the REPLACE WITH drop-down is empty.

Solution: This drop-down does not read the normal FONTS folder in Windows; it reads the printer fonts. If they are on a laptop or any machine that has not had a printer installed, have them download and install any printer driver.

Issue:  When printing from ExamView 2.0 on Windows 2000, the print is extremely small.

Solution:  This is caused by a change Microsoft made in the way printing is handled under Windows 2000/XP to support printers connected via USB.  This was corrected in ExamView Pro 3.6.

Issue: Why don’t tests with mathematical equations print properly?

Solution: For some Macintosh printers, you may need to install the FSC Symbol font on each workstation to print tests with equations.  This occurs only on a small number of printers.  Make sure that you install the FSC Symbol font on each workstation, or copy the font from another computer.  As an alternative solution, you may want to download an updated printer driver from the internet.

Issue: In a question with a repeating decimal, the bar does not display over the number that repeats.

Solution:  Per the developer, this is a glitch in the program that appears in ExamView Pro version 4.x on Macs only.  The glitch should be corrected in ExamView Pro version 5.x.  To workaround the problem:

1.       Click the Calculate Values button in the taskbar.

2.       Save and close the test.

3.       When the test is reopened, the bar should appear.

Note: The above steps can also be applied to entire questions banks via the Question Bank Editor.
