ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS:

General

Issue: The software does not give me a number line or graph to answer questions that relate to them.

Solution:

You can have this print out 1 of 2 ways:

1. Print the graph with the question:

When you have completed picking the questions for the test and they are on the worksheet, go to worksheet and define page layout. Where you see "answer blank placement" check the circle beside Answer next to question. You should then be able to print out the graph with the question.

2. Print the graphs on a separate answer sheet.

When you have completed picking the questions for the test and they are on the worksheet, go to worksheet and define page layout. Where you see "answer blank placement" check the circle beside Separate Sheet. Then when you go to print there is a box that says Sheets. You want to make sure that the box next to Answer is checked. You can then print.

Issue: I cannot create a new question on my testbank.

Solution: Ensure that the Mathematics Applications & Connections windows test generator is not installed on the PC. The version for the Mathematics Applications & Connections windows test generator is 1.52. The Mathematics Applications & Connections test generator will allow creating and editing of question only for the Mathematics Applications & Connections questions.

Issue: I updated my equation editor by replacing it with MathType, but now it doesn’t work.

Solution: Although Designed Science created both programs, MathType is not compatible with earlier versions of Equation Editor. The only solution is to try installing MathType into another directory.

Issue: Large bold letters, such as b and g, are overwriting some of the equations in the problems.

Solution: The bold, capitalized letters over math problems is caused by incorrectly installed symbol fonts. Usually a re-install of Equation Editor fixes it. Have the user get a copy of Equation Editor either as a zip file or a self-executing file. Extract the files onto a floppy diskette. Run install.exe and equation editor will be installed into the Windows directory (folder) containing the testing application. This should force the correct font installation.

Windows

Issue:  Will program run on Windows NT, 2000, XP?

Solution: Cursory testing has been performed on these Windows platforms and no problems were found.

Issue: I am not able to print to a HP Deskjet printer.

Solution: Older IPS testing software for DOS can be updated to support most models of the HP Deskjet printers. There are 4 classes of Deskjet printers now supported by these updates:

  1. Deskjet, Deskjet Plus, Deskjet 500, 500C, 550C and 560C (UPDATE 1)
  2. same as above with RAM cartridge installed (UPDATE 1)
  3. Deskjet portable, 300 series, Deskjet 520 (UPDATE 1)
  4. Deskjet 540, 600 series and 800 series (UPDATE 2)

Printers in classes 1 and 3 should use the Deskjet update 1.0. This requires an additional 20K to 30K of additional memory than indicated in the minimum requirements.

The existing software supports printers in class 2 and no update is needed.

Printers in class 4 should use Deskjet update 2.0. Users must choose ‘HP Laserjet’ as their printer option.

The updates can be downloaded from our epgtech website

1.       Go to http://www.epgtech.com

2.       Click on F.A.Q.

3.       Choose the Glencoe division

4.       Choose Academic

5.       Choose Glencoe Testmakers (General)

6.       Choose the appropriate UPDATE (listed above) for the IPS Testmakers.

Issue: The test will not print to my printer in Windows 95.

Solution: The HP Deskjet 820 and the HP Deskjet 870 printers are windows-only printers and they will not print from DOS programs.

This is also true for the following Cannon Bubble Jet Printers:

BJC-1000 Series

BJC-2000 Series

BJC-6000 Series

BJC-8000

BJC-8200

BJC-8500

*Per the Canon website the BJC-7000 and BJC-7004 are compatible with DOS only through a special emulation driver. You will need to download it from their website: http://www.ccsi.canon.com

Issue: The Item Editor will not run.

Solution: You must restart the computer after installation to set the Item Editor.

Issue: Greek characters are displayed instead of digits or symbols.

Solution: The digits in fractions, radicals, etc. are replaced by foreign characters.

First check the fonts folder on the hard drive and look for a font group called Times New Roman Special (NOT Times New Roman).  It may also be named TNRS or TNR Special.  By group I mean it will include Italicized and Bold such as TNR Bold Special and TNR Italicized Special.

If found remove all of them from the fonts folder then try printing again.

If that didn’t help then go back to the fonts folder and look for a font called Wing Dings. Move it out of the Font folder, to the desktop.  Now try printing.

If that didn’t help then return the Wing Dings font to the Fonts folder.  If none of the above helped then this next suggestion is done inside the Worksheet builder program.

1.       Start the Worksheet Builder program

2.       Click on Edit

3.       Click on Standard Styles

4.       Click on Advanced

5.       Now you will see different tabs such as Body, Title, Highlight etc…. click on the tab named Symbol and make sure that the font that’s chosen is named Symbol.  If it’s set to something else then click on the drop-down menu for Font and choose Symbol and click OK.

Now try printing.

Issue: Greek characters are printed instead of English characters in many of the questions using a Lexmark printer.

Solution: The source of the problem lies with font conflicts that come with the Lexmark printer. Go to the Lexmark home page and download two tech documents for information on the fix.

Go to www.lexmark.com, select the tech support section and look for "Adobe fonts not printing properly..." & Win 95 PCL Custom Driver..." sheets to print or download.

Issue: I can’t enter new values in the Number of Forms section.

Solution: The NUM LOCK must be on to enter values to the field.

Issue: The window for the test generator appears but the program will not start.

Solution: Ensure that a Mathematics Applications & Connections book has not been added to an Algebra test generator. The Mathematics Applications & Connections test generator must be installed to use Mathematics Applications & Connections books. The other books can then be added to the Mathematics Applications & Connections test generator, which is version 1.52. However, you can edit questions or create questions for Mathematics Applications & Connections tests only.

Macintosh

Issue: Will this program run on OS X?

Solution: It will run on OS X with Classic.

Note: Our customer base uses a wide variety of operating systems and applications and our software must be developed to be used on some lower end systems to meet our customer needs. Because of this, we cannot guarantee that our software will always work as expected as new operating systems and other applications are developed. Issue: I cannot print from my PowerMac to a Stylewriter printer. OR

The program will not run on my PowerMac.

Solution: The test maker program will not load at times or an error message occurs when there is an attempt to print when PowerMac 5200, 5300 and 5600 are connected to Stylewriter 1200, 1500, 2400, 2500.

Issue: My test maker crashes when I try to print from my PowerMac.

Solution: Having the Stylewriter driver in the extensions will cause a program crash when selecting ‘PAGE SETUP’ or ‘PRINT’ whether or not the Stylewriter printer has been chosen.

Issue:  When I print I get Greek (sometimes referred to as garbage) looking symbols instead of multiplication, division, subtraction, addition etc… symbols.

Solution: Open the System Folder, Hard drive, and then look for a Fonts (Disabled) folder.  Open the Fonts (Disabled) folder and if there is a font in there named Symbol move it to the Fonts folder.

Now try printing. If this didn’t help then the next suggestion is done inside the Test and Review software.

1.       Start the Test and Review software

2.       Click on Edit

3.       Click on Standard Styles

4.       Click on Advanced

5.       Look for Standard Styles and click the drop-down menu.

6.       You will see Body, Title etc….click on Symbol

7.       Now below that where it says Font check to see if that’s set to Symbol, if it isn’t then click the drop-down menu and choose Symbol.

8.       Click OK.

Now try printing. If this didn’t help open the Hard drive, System Folder and the Fonts folder. Look for a font group called Times New Roman Special (NOT Times New Roman).  It may also be named TNRS or TNR Special.  It will include Italicized and Bold such as TNR Bold Special and TNR Italicized Special.

Remove all Times New Roman Special from the fonts folder, such as to the desktop, and then try printing again. If that didn’t help then go back into the fonts folder and look for a font called Wing Dings. Move that font out of the Font folder, such as to the desktop.  Now try printing.

If that didn’t help then they can move the TNR Special and Wing Dings fonts back into the Fonts folder.
