INSTALLATION TIPS:

1.       Insert the CD into the drive.

2.       Double-click on the My Computer icon and then the CD drive (normally it is D:\).

3.       Double-click on the Setup icon with the double triangles.

4.       Click Next at the Welcome screen.

5.       Follow the onscreen prompts depending on your installation.

Network Install - This is the preferred installation method.

1.       When installing on a network, the Teacher Management portion automatically installs.

2.       On the first login, you are prompted to create a class.  To do this, click on Options, Teacher Options and key the password.

3.       Select a student data storage location when creating classes:

a.       Advanced Data Storage Option allows student data to save outside of the KCA\Classes subdirectory, in home directories.  This option includes a high-security mode to deter students from accessing other students’ data, and requires a qualified network systems person.

b.       Save to Subdirectory - student data files are stored in the Classes subdirectory of KCA.

Note:  The Classes subdirectory structure can be created in another area of the network by using the -C command.  This information is in Chapter 1 of the Software Installation Guide, or call Software Support (click here for their information).

4.       When creating the class:

Note:  There is an option to disable student self-registration.

a.                   If the class saves to Subdirectory, either the teacher or students can add students to the class.

b.                   If saving to High Security Mode or Advanced the students should add themselves to a class.

Standalone Install

1.       When Installing standalone:

  • We recommend that you install on student workstations without Teacher Management (TM) and save to floppy disk.  Saving to the hard drive requires students to use the same workstation.

Note:  Click here to view the exception.

  • If you select a teacher workstation install, the teacher must create one or more classes, add students on a workstation, then copy the C:\KCA\Classes directory to the other workstation hard drives.  If saving to the hard drive and a student moves to a different PC, their data is in multiple locations.

2.       Installing without Teacher Management –

a.                   Click KCA setup and choose the lesson range (1-35, 1-80 or 81-150).  The setup needs to be run for each lesson range you plan to use.

b.                   Choose where student data will be stored.

c.                   An icon is created for students to start the program.

3.       Install Teacher Management on a PC accessible by the teacher –

a.                   The teacher must create one or more classes.

b.                   When creating a class, uncheck the Students connected by LAN check box, or the program may not update the student data disks correctly.

c.                   Student data disks can be collected to update in Teacher Options on the teacher workstation.

GENERAL ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS:

Issue:   What is High Security Mode?

Solution:  High Security Mode (HSM) was designed to prevent students from accessing and/or compromising other students’ work.  Teachers should never update in Teacher Management while any students are logged in.

1.       Creating a class that saves to HSM:

·                     Requires a systems person to setup students with unique network logins, and write a login script to direct student data to their home directories.  HSM looks for student data 2-3 levels deep using a mapped network drive or UNC path, but not both, for the same class.

·                     Accepts UNC paths for student data storage.

·                     Limits students from accessing and destroying other students’ data.

·                     Copies student files from student home directories to KCA\Classes in Teacher Management.

·                     Teachers need rights to students’ folders to view their lessons click here for rights information.

2.       Lessons save only to students’ home directories.

3.       Update feature–

  • When opening a class in Teacher Management, you get an ‘Update Now?’ prompt.  Choosing Yes ‘copies student data into KCA\Classes\...
  • Only one instructor at a time should update, transfer, delete or change students and/or classes.

4.       If a teacher changes/corrects a student name, only the student folder in KCA\Classes is altered.  The folder in the student’s home directory does not change.  The teacher needs to change the password in the student’s home directory as well.

5.       When deleting classes in Teacher Management, delete the KCADATA folders in students’ home directories too.

Issue:    What is 'Advanced' Data Storage?

Solution:  Advanced Data Storage saves student data in two places.  Each student should add himself/herself to the class.  On their first login, two folders are created:  1) a KCADATA folder at the root of their home directory, and 2) a folder in KCA\Classes\Class Name\Student_Name.

To use Advanced Data Storage each student needs:

1.    A unique login to the network.

2.    Adequate permissions/rights (click here for this information).

3.    Their home directory mapped to the ‘root’ of the network drive for the KCADATA folder.
Note:  When creating a class, the advanced option allows only a mapped drive letter.

4.    A login script to direct student lessons to the home directory.  The login script is the responsibility of the school’s System Administrator; Software Support does not assist with this.

Notes:

·         Since dual records exist for each student, check both places when searching for corrupt files.

·         KCA version 3 also has a High Security Mode feature that provides even more flexibility.

Issue:  What rights or permissions are required?

Solution:

·         Teachers need full rights, equivalent to everything except Supervisor and Access Control, to the entire KCA directory.  If students save to other than Subdirectory, teachers also need these rights to the students’ home directories.

·         Students – if saving to

a.                   Subdirectory - students need full rights (equivalent to everything except Supervisory and Access Control) to the Classes subdirectory of KCA and the word processor directory.

b.                   Advanced Data Storage – students need full rights as above to Classes subdirectory of KCA on the network and the KCADATA folder in their home directory.

c.                   High Security Mode – students need full rights to KCADATA in their home directory and Read permissions to the Classes subdirectory of KCA.

NOTE:  If saving to High Security Mode or Advanced, as an extra security measure, the KCA\Classes subdirectory can be set to ‘hidden.’

Issue:  Can I install KCA to the hard drive and save to the network?

Solution:   Yes, this can be done using a –C command.  Instructions are in the Teacher Courseware Manual, Chapter 2,  or call Software Support to have the instructions emailed (click here for their information).

Issue:  During install, the Choose Destination Location box indicates the drive has insufficient free space.

Solution:  KCA version 3 needs 70 MB of free hard-disk space, which the selected drive does not have.  If there is another drive with at least 70 MB of free space, choose it and click OK to continue.  Otherwise, press Esc to cancel the install, free up some disk space, and then run the install.

Issue:   When can Instructors make changes in Teacher Management?

Solution:

·                                             If installed on the network and saving to Subdirectory or Advanced, instructors can make changes in Teacher Management when no students are logged into that same class.

·                                             If students save to High Security Mode, all students in all classes should be logged out.

Issue:  Teacher can’t view student data after ‘updating’ in High Security Mode (HSM)       Or
“Student has not completed any exercises” message occurs after updating HSM

Solution:   HSM automatically checks 3 levels deep for student data that is stored outside of the KCA program.  Instructors should have full permissions to students’ home directories, or at a minimum they need read.

Example:  KCA is installed to K:\KCA.  When the Period 1 class is created, the student data path is set to save student data at H:\Students\2007.  When opening the class in Teacher Options, the teacher will be prompted with Update student data now?  Clicking Yes pulls (copies) lesson data from students’ home directories on H: and pastes them into each student’s folder in K:\KCA\Classes\(name of class)\.

·         If the teacher has always been unable to view student data - open Teacher Options, select the class and click on Edit Class Info.  Ensure the data path is correct and does not point back top where KCA is installed.

·         If the student data is stored deeper than 3 folders, the KCA.ini file needs to be edited.  The teacher or Admin needs to call Software Support for assistance.

Issue:   Prompted to “Add the student” when updating in HSM, yet the student updated before.

Solution:  This applies to students who save to High Security Mode.  The permissions may have been changed between the updates.  In the KCA\Classes on the network, open that class folder, and move that student folder to the desktop.  Now the data for this student should upload.

Issue:   I can’t update from student data disks into Teacher Management.

Solution:  Make sure the Students Connected by LAN option in the Class Information dialog box is not checked.

Issue:  I forgot the new teacher options password I created.

Solution:  The Teacher Options password can’t be viewed but it can be reset to the default password.  The Teacher or Admin can call Software Support for the instructions (click here for their information).

Issue:    Can I prevent students from self-registering?

Solution:   Yes.  To do this, when creating a class, checkmark the Disable student registration box.  This feature can be changed at any time.

Issue:  Is there a maximum number of classes and students per class?

Solution:  Yes, the limits are 25 classes and 75 students per class.  Exceeding the limits can cause problems when using the program.

Issue:  The program is not scoring some exercises.

Solution:  Not all exercises are graded.

·         Not scored are:  warm-ups, new key presentations, practice documents and certain skillbuilding and document processing exercises.

·         Ensure Word documents save inside students’ folders:

o        Saving to subdirectory – the folder is the student’s LastName_FirstName.

o        If saving to High Security Mode, Advanced or floppy disk, the folder is named KCADATA.

Issue:  How much space is needed for the student data files on a network?

Solution:  Approximately 5 MB of space per student is recommended if doing most lessons.

Issue:  The maximum number of Detailed Reports has been reached.

Solution:  A maximum of 200 Detailed Reports (_.drp) can be accessible from a Summary Report.  When the maximum is reached, KCA makes room for new DRPs by deleting the oldest ones.  When this happens, you will be unable to access older DRPs. Before the maximum is reached, you can remove old files using Files > Delete Files from the menu bar.

Issue:  When viewing student data in Teacher Options, I clicked the scroll arrow and get a black screen.

Solution:  This was fixed in KCA Maintenance Release 3 (MR3), version 3.0.0.127.  The black screen occurred when the scroll arrow was clicked.

Call Software Support if you need to obtain MR 3 (click here for their information).

Workarounds:

·         Drag the scrollbar or click the scroll box.

·         Click the blackened area to view the student name(s).

·         Minimize and then maximize KCA to refresh the screen.

Issue:  I want to create my own custom timed writings in Teacher Options.

Solution:  This is currently not a feature of KCA.

Issue:    When starting KCA, a dialog box says to insert a data disk.

Solution:  For a blank data disk or assistance, contact Software Support (click here for their contact information).

·         If you add students to classes using Teacher Management, and they save to floppy disk, then each student needs an unused KCA data disk with the appropriate files.  If you let students self-register in classes that save to floppy disk, then they can use a blank formatted disk.

·         The data disk may be defective or corrupt.

o       If defective, login as a “new” student with a new data disk and key a slightly different name.

o       If data is corrupt on the disk, the exact error message will help determine the problem.

Issue:   Students cannot launch Lessons 81 through 150.

Solution:

Network install – When creating classes, the Course Lessons options are 1-35, 1-80 or 81-150.  To launch lessons 81-150, the instructor needs to create a new class for “Lessons 81-150.”  Then have students login as New, or use Teacher Options to transfer them from the old class into the new one.

Standalone install –Installation options are for lessons 1-3, 1-80 and 81-150.  Lessons 81-150 require a separate install.  If saving to the hard drive, you can’t use the same student data location when installing additional levels.

Note:  If installing to the network, or a teacher station as standalone, all lessons automatically install.

Issue:  Lesson 6 E, Skillbuilding – Spacing After Punctuation, cannot view on report screen.

Solution:  In KCA version 3.0.0.124, if you enter a lesson range then lesson 6.E does not show up.  In order to view lesson 6 E, select All under Lessons.  This was fixed in KCA version 3.0.0.127 (Maintenance Release 3).

Contact Software Support if you need to obtain Maintenance Release 3 (click here for their information).

Issue:   Lesson 72, Academic Style Report 17 – The Student Name, Teacher Name, and Class Name scores as incorrect.

Solution:  Students’ First and Last Names, Teacher Name and Class Name need to match what students added to the Personal Information screen under the Options menu.

Issue:   Lesson 75, Report 21 – shows an error in the Footnote.

Solution:   Spacing twice after the footnote number would cause a scoring error for the Footnote reference but no errors appear on the footnote numbers.  This resulted from a bug in scoring, making it impossible to score perfectly.  This was fixed in KCA version 3.1.0.127 (Maintenance Release 3).

Contact Software Support if you need to obtain Maintenance Release 3 (click here for their information).

Issue:   How does the timings graph compute an average?       OR
The timings average appears to be incorrect.

Solution:  KCA selects timings based on WAM (words a minute) and Errors in the exercises.  Default grading parameters are listed in Chapter 5 of the Teacher Courseware Manual.

·         No more than one exercise is picked from a lesson.

·         All WAM are compared for exercises within the Error Limit.  Three timings are chosen with the highest WAM that are less than or equal to the Error Limit.  If there are not three timings to match this, others are shown in order to get three timings.

·         One letter grade is subtracted for each timing used that is over the Error Limit.

·         There is no penalty if too few exercises are completed.

·         Penalties are assessed for exercises that are completed but not within the Error Limit.

Issue:  Can I add a Format Grade?

Solution:  KCA does not automatically score formatting errors.  A Format Grade can be added for Progress Checks and Word Processor Tests.  Using a format grade will add a grade averaged in with the Text grade that is automatically assigned in Teacher Management.

To assign a Format weight:

1.       In Teacher Options, open the class.

2.       Click the Edit Grading Parameters button and assign a parameter for Technique Grade, Objective Tests, and up to 3 Additional Grade factors.

3.       Save the setting.

4.       Select the students’ names and click Enter Additional Grades.

5.       You can enter a grade factor using a 4-point scale (4.0 is an A and 0.0 is an F) for the parameters you added.

NOTE: Weights you assign are listed above the column headings on the Class Roster screen.

Issue:   How do I change the setting for the Word Processor, Spreadsheet or Database?

Solution:  The following instructions are for MS Word.  Use the same process for Excel and Access:

To change the Word settings:

  1. In Teacher Options click on Options Settings, at the top left.
  2. Click once on STANDARD to highlight it, and then

a.       If all workstations use the same version of Word – click EDIT.

b.       If multiple versions of Word are used – click COPY and add a name (up to 8-characters) for the version you want to use, like Word2000, then click OK.

c.       Select the new option you named and click on EDIT.

  1. Click on Select or Change Word Processor.
  2. Checkmark the appropriate box under Associated Word Processors and the radial dial for Currently active student word processor.
  3. If Word is not located in the default path, click the Browse button and navigate to Word.
  4. Click Save, and click Save again.
  5. Click Close and then Return to KCA.
  6. Completely exit KCA then login again..

If the school uses multiple versions of Word (such as MS Office 2003 and XP) –

·         All workstations must use the same path for each version of Word as the path is a global setting.

·         When students login, at the Log-on Information screen, change the Options File to the correct Option.  On subsequent logins, KCA uses this same Option until another one is selected.

Note:  If Word does not open, then it may not be in the default location, a different Word version, or there could be a problem with an anti-virus program.  Note any error message and contact Software Support (click here for their information).

Issue:   The Caps Lock lesson works in reverse when doing Lesson 17.

Solution:  If students turn Caps Lock ON before opening the exercise, it has a reverse effect causing  upper case letters become lower case, and vice versa.  So, wait until the exercise window opens before turning Caps Lock ON.

Issue:  How do I reduce the pages when student reports print each exercise on separate pages?

Solution:  Click the first exercise, next shift-click the last exercise, and then print.  This should print the exercises on the same page.

Issue:   When printing Word documents, students get multiple headers and/or multiple pages.

Solution:  This applied to KCA when using MS Word 97.  It is an incompatibility between newer operating systems, with the earlier MS Word version, and how KCA interfaces with Word.  The issue may result in multiple printings of the:

1.       Document header (student name, lesson, etc.) – this occurred with Word 97 SR-1 and later, but not
the original version of Word 97.  KCA saved a header each time Word was opened, so if Word is opened 3 times, there were 3 headers.

2.       Entire document - this occurred with all Word 97 versions.  It involved KCA’s old interface which opened multiple copies of Word.  A new interface in KCA version 3 fixes this for Word XP and 2000, but not for Word 97.

Workarounds:

1.       For document t header –

a.       Use a Word Processor newer than Word 97, or use the original version of Word 97.

b.       Try this - open the document in Word and delete the extra headers.  If it doesn’t work, there is no other workaround.

2.       For multiple documents - click on “View in Application” then print while in Word.

Note:  These were reproduced on Windows 2000 (and may occur on Windows XP) when using Word 97.

Issue:  Common causes of corrupt student data

Solution:  Below are the most common reasons that student data can become corrupt.

1.       Power surge or power outage while logged into KCA.

2.       An abnormal abort or exit of the program.  This includes, but is not limited to, power outages or power surges, having to reboot the PC, or a Windows error.

3.       Turning the computer off without exiting KCA or while exiting.  While exiting, KCA updates student data so powering the computer off can corrupt file(s) that tell where the student left off.

4.       Saving to floppy disk and removing the disk while exiting KCA.  If the floppy drive light was still lit, it could have the same result as above, corrupting file(s).

5.       Bumping the computer or keyboard, or something leaning on the keyboard (such as the textbook) that may be depressing one or more keys.

6.       Having to depress Alt+Ctrl+Dele to exit KCA because the computer is locked up.

7.       A problem on the network that is not evident to teachers and students.

8.       A teacher making changes in Teacher Options while a student in that class is logged into KCA.

9.       Teacher updating High Security Mode (HSM) students while “any” student is logged in.  When updating in HSM, all student records are scanned.

Issue:  Can student work be saved to writeable CDs?

Solution:  No.  CDs are designed to be written sequentially (in single or multi sessions).  Storing student data requires random access to the storage media.

Issue:  In Teacher Options, when printing student reports with many pages, the left margin shifts to the right for each successive page.

Solution:  This occurred at some schools and was fixed in Maintenance Release 2, version 3.0.0.124.

The workaround is:

1.       Open the class in Teacher Options.

2.       Highlight the student name.

3.       Click on View Report, then Print.

4.       Change the Print Range to print a few pages at a time.

Contact Software Support if you need to obtain the Maintenance Release (click here for their information).

o

ERROR MESSAGES:

Issue:  Error 1000:  “Unable to open BPK file.”         OR

Error “Could not create the data file…” with the path and document name       OR

Error “Unable to locate BPK file.”       OR

 Error "Could not create document..."

Solution:   This can occur if permissions are not properly granted, or when a template file is corrupt or not found.

Permissions issue:

1.       If this is the first login attempt, first ensure permissions are provided to where students’ lessons are saving.  To check it:

a.       Have a student open Word from the desktop, type their first name, then try to save the file in their Home directory and/or the KCA\Classes\(name of class) folder.

b.       If it doesn’t save, depending on the error message, it is possible the student does not have adequate permissions.

Corrupt or missing file(s):

1.       If the .BPK or .PPK template file is corrupt or missing, make a backup of the Classes subdirectory and reinstall KCA.

2.       If students still cannot login, verify that the emptyXX.doc (with the XX being the Word version of 11, 02 or 2k) Word files are in the KCA folder.  If the files are not present, then backup the Classes subdirectory and reinstall KCA.  Students need read access to these files.

Issue:   Error "E003 Path not found" when starting the program.

Solution:  KCA cannot find the directory specified for the student data location.

·         Using Windows Explorer, verify that student data files and directories were not moved or deleted.

·         If using Teacher Options - verify that the student data location is correct for the class.

·         If not using Teacher Options - make sure the shortcut includes the full and correct path to the student's data file (example:  C:/kca/kca.exe A:/).

Issue:  “Error 3 in Module 9009.  Problem trying to open ...(student name)”

Solution:  This occurred when a teacher tried to open a class after transferring students out of it and into a new class.  A student transferred to the new class without their lesson history.

Error 9009 means there is a duplicate student in the class.

  1. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer and browse to KCA on the network.
  2. Open the Classes subdirectory.
  3. Open the class folder that the student transferred “from.”
  4. Open the student’s folder and confirm it contains the student’s lesson files.
  5. If the files are there:

a.                   Open the new class the student transferred into, and remove or delete the folder for that student.

b.                   Launch KCA Teacher Options, then open the original class and transfer the student again.

  1. If the files are not there:

a.                   If you backup the Classes subdirectory, move the student’s folder into the new class.

b.                   If there is not a backup and the student’s lessons are not in the new class either, then their lessons are gone.  Delete the student’s folder and add him/her to the class as a new student.

Issue:  “Error 4 has occurred in module 9004”           OR
”Error accessing class file”

Solution:  This can occur if a teacher tries to edit a student while that same student is logged into KCA.  Before a teacher tries to make any change for a student, ensure that student is logged out.  Normally the student data is not affected.

Issue:   Error 6000  “Log file has an invalid header”    OR

Error “Problem with the student data in folder...” with the path to the student folder

Solution:  The KCA.LOG file is corrupt or missing.  The student will be unable to login, and the teacher may be unable to open the class in Teacher Options.

Saving to Subdirectory

1.       Use the path in the error message to browse to that location

2.       If you have a backup, replace the file on the network or hard drive.

3.       If there is no backup, either move the student’s KCADATA folder to the desktop, or rename the file inside it to:  KCAold.LOG

4.       Re-add the student as New to the class.  If you:

a.                   Removed their folder, you can use the same name.

b.                   Renamed the .LOG file, modify their name slightly, such as Dustin Day2.

Saving to Advanced or High Security Mode

There are two possible locations for the corrupt file:  KCA\Classes\... and/or the student’s home directory.

If you want to expend the effort to attempt  to recuperate the student’s work, you can try this:

1.       Use the path in the error message to browse to the location of the corrupt file on the network.

2.       In KCA\Classes\... copy the student’s KCA.LOG file and paste it onto the desktop.

3.       Go to the student’s home directory, open the KCADATA folder.

a.                               Copy the KCA.LOG file and paste it into a “folder on the desktop” to keep them separate.

b.                               Return to KCA\Classes\... and paste the .LOG file into the student’s folder (from KCADATA).

c.                               If the student can login, no further action is needed.

4.       If the student can’t login, open the “folder on the desktop” that you created.

a.                               Copy the .LOG file and paste it into the student’s folder in KCA\Classes\... and into the KCADATA folder in the student’s home directory.

b.                               If the student can login, no further action is needed.

5.       If neither of these worked, then both KCA.LOG files are corrupt.  If you have a backup, then replace the files in both places.  Otherwise, you need to:

a.                               Delete or remove the entire KCADATA folder in the home directory, and

b.                               Rename the KCA.LOG file or delete the student’s entire folder from KCA\Classes\...

c.                               Have the student login as New.  When they login, new folders will be created in the home directory  (KCADATA) and in KCA\Classes (student’s LastName_FirstName).

o

Issue:  “Error 2 in module 6501. Summary report does not belong to current student.”    OR

“Error 6504.9  trying to set file pointer error” when logging in.     OR

“Error unable to load KCA.SRP.”

Solution:   These error messages indicate that one or more students have a corrupt Summary Report file (KCA.SRP).  The file size usually goes to zero KB.  The student can’t login and the teacher usually can’t open the class in Teacher Options.

·         If you save only to floppy disk:

o        And you updated students in Teacher Management, if that file is still intact then copy the file from the teacher workstation and onto the floppy disk, otherwise

o        Issue a new data disk to the student.

When you identify the student with the corrupt file:

Note:  In all instances, if you have a backup then replace the file.

1.       If networked and the class saves to subdirectory and there is no backup:

a.       Move the student’s folder to the desktop and add them as new to the class.

b.       Optional:  If Word documents were done and need to be recuperated, copy the .doc files from the folder on the desktop and paste them into that student’s new folder on the network. The student can edit and rescore them.

2.       If the class saves to Advanced or High Security Mode, the corrupt file can be in the Classes subdirectory, the student’s home directory, or both places.

a.       If the teacher can open the class in Teacher Options, then the file is corrupt in the student’s home directory.  Copy the KCA.SRP file from KCA\Classes/(name of class) and paste it into the KCADATA folder in the student’s home directory.

b.       If the teacher can’t open the class and student can’t login, the file may be corrupt in both places.

3.       If saving to floppy disk only:

a.       If lessons are updated on the instructor workstation, copy that student’s KCA.SRP file from the instructor workstation to the data disk, inside the KCADATA folder.

b.       If lessons are not updated on the instructor workstation, give the student a new data disk, have them login as New

c.       Optional:  If Word documents were done and need to be recuperated, copy these into the KCADATA folder and the student can edit and rescore them.

4.       If you can’t open the class in Teacher Options and can’t locate the student with the corrupt file:

a.       Open My Computer or Windows Explorer and browse to KCA\Classes\(name of class).

b.       Move two to three student folders at a time to the desktop; then try to open the class in Teacher Options.

c.       Repeat the process until you can open the class.

d.       To determine which of the three folders has the corrupt file, return one folder at a time to KCA\Classes then open the class in Teacher Options, until you get the error again.

e.       If there is no backup, remove that student’s folder, and add them as new to the class.

Issue:  Error 7001  “Unable to write (or read) Detailed Report”          OR

Error 7001 “A required resource was unavailable”        OR

“The Detailed Report has an invalid header”

Solution:  Error 7001 is insufficient memory, rights, path, corrupt KCA_drp file, or a full data disk,

·         Rights/Permissions – click here for information.

·         Path - ensure it is correct.  If saving to High Security Mode, use the same path for all students.

·         Corrupt KCA_.drp file – The results are still on the Report screen, but you can’t view the text for that group of lessons.

§         Look for a KCA_.dp with zero or 1 KB, or the most current date, and replace it with a backup.  If none, rename it to KCA_old.drp and redo the lesson if needed.

§         If saving to Advanced or High Security Mode, the corrupt file could be in the Classes subdirectory or KCADATA folder in the student’s home directory.  If both files are zero or 1 KB, both are corrupt so rename the file in both places.

·         For “required resource was unavailable” – increase memory on the computers.  If students do many lessons, they each need about 5 MB of space.

·         Full data disk – Click on Files then Delete Files and delete some of the older files.

Issue:  “Error 2 occurred in Module 7002.  The file could not be located.”         OR

“Error 7002 2.  Unable to read detailed report.  The file could not be located.”

Solution:  This occurred when trying to view a report and a plus sign (+) indicates the text can be viewed.  The error means the Detailed Report is missing, corrupt or was renamed and you can’t view it. This will not affect the student’s ability to continue doing lessons.

Issue:  “Error 10013 occurred in Module 6.  Unable to load grade report.”

Solution:   This indicates a corrupt kcagrade.rpt file.  This file can be deleted.  It is recreated when the class is opened again in Teacher Options.

Issue:   “Error 10016 in Module 6.  Unable to load the summary report”        OR
“Unable to load log file. ”

Solution:   Either the KCA.SRP (summary report) or KCA.LOG (log) file is corrupt.  The corrupt file usually goes to 0 KB in size.  These two files are mandatory for each student.  The KCA.SRP file increases in size as students do lessons, so a KCA.SRP file with 1 KB may also be corrupt.

If the KCA.LOG file is corrupt, click here.  If the KCA.SRP file is corrupt, click here.

1.       If the student is new, or there is no back-up, delete the student’s folder and re-add the student as New to the class.

2.       If networked, open My Computer or Windows Explorer then go to KCA\Classes:

a.       Click on the Search icon and search for the KCA.LOG or KCA.SRP files.

b.       Look for the file that is 0 KB, and if found, note the student’s folder name.

c.       Replace the file with a backup.

d.       If no backup:

                     i.      And the student did word documents that you want to recuperate, then move the folder to the desktop.  Add the student to the class as new, and move the Word documents into the new folder.  The student can edit and rescore the documents.

ii.      Otherwise, delete that student’s folder and add them to the class as a new student.

3.       If saving to floppy disk:

a.       If you open Teacher Options and using that disk can add the student into a different class, then the files on the floppy disk are fine.

b.       If you can open the class in Teacher Options the files on the network are fine.  Find the student’s folder and copy the file from there and paste it into the KCADATA folder on the floppy disk.

c.       If you can’t open the class in Teacher Options, the file is corrupt on the network.  If it not corrupt on the floppy disk, then copy the file from the KCADATA folder on the disk into the student's folder on the network.

d.       If the file is corrupt in both places and you backup, replace the file.  If no back-up, then delete or move the student’s folder, give the student a new data disk, and add them as new to the class.

Issue:  “Error 1006 has occurred in module 1”       OR

“Unable to read class information file. The file cannot be located ”   OR

“Unable to open classes document at x:\kca\classes\...” opening Teacher Options       OR

Error - Cannot create class” in Teacher Management    OR

No classes are listed on the student login screen

Solution:   Each class folder has a file consisting of the class name with .lst as the filename extension.  These errors occur when the .lst file is corrupt, missing, or the maximum quantity of classes (25) is exceeded.  Example:  A class named Period 1 will contain a Period 1.lst file.

·         A corrupt .lst file usually shows a size of 0 KB.

·         If there are over 25 classes, delete those not being used.

·         If over 25 classes are required, a second install of KCA may be required.

·         Do not install KCA version 3 over an KCA version 1 or 2 as the file structures are different.  Instead, wait until the end of the semester or install it to a completely different location.  You can install over earlier KCA 3 versions.

1.       If the class is not needed, delete the class folder.

2.       If it is an active class and:

a.       You backup - replace the .lst file.

b.       You don’t backup - find and move that class folder to the desktop, create a new class with the same name, and copy/move only the student folders into the new class.

3.       If you installed KCA version 3 over an older KCA version, then uninstall and reinstall KCA version 3.

Issue:  Word documents score multiple errors, yet the text is correct.

Solution:   This happened to schools who upgraded to Microsoft’s Service Pack 3 for Word XP.  It occurred randomly and was not applicable to a specific word lesson.  The cause was due to Microsoft introducing a product ID change to the Word file format in the SP3 update.

Workaround:  Inserting a blank line at the beginning of Word documents normally resolved this.

Issue:  Error “could not create document...”

Solution:   Potential causes:

1.       Insufficient rights/permissions  - click here for rights information.

2.       Corrupt normal.dot file – Search the hard drive and delete the normal.dot file.   It will recreate when MS Word is opened again.

3.       KCA template – On a network install, if rights are correctly assigned, try this:

a.       Have the student open MS Word outside of KCA, type their first name, and try to save the file in the KCADATA file in their home directory.

b.       If it saves, have them try to save it in their student folder in the Classes subdirectory.

c.       If the file saves, the KCA template file may be corrupt so backup the Classes subdirectory, then reinstall KCA.

Issue:  Error “Unable to load KCA.SRP - reached end of file while reading object 65053” at login.

Solution:  This indicates a corrupt KCA.SRP file.  Some options are:

1.       Saving to subdirectory and there is a backup – replace the student’s .SRP file from the back-up.

2.       Saving to subdirectory and no backup - add them as a new student, slightly altering their name.

3.       Saving to floppy disk and Teacher Management is updated – Try to open the class on the teacher workstation

a.       If it opens - copy the student’s KCA.SRP file from the teacher workstation onto the disk.

b.       If it doesn’t open – give the student a new disk to login as New, slightly altering their name.

4.       Saving to floppy disk and Teacher Management is not updated - give the student a new disk to login as New.

For solutions to a corrupt KCA.SRP file, click here.

Note:  If students had done Word documents, copy them back into the save location.  Students can then edit and rescore them without having to retype them.  When editing, a minor change needs to be made in Word in order to rescore, for example, press the spacebar and then the Backspace key.

Issue:   Error “WLL failed to completely launch Word Processor” when opening Word 2000.

Solution:  Several things can cause this message.  Try these one at a time:

1.       First, lower the Word Macro Security setting:  Open MS Word, choose Tools> Macro> Security, and set it to Low.

2.       On Windows 98 and later, add the KCA Macro to MS Word:

a.       Open MS Word and click on Tools, then Templates and Add-Ins.

b.       Click Add and browse to the KCA directory.

c.       Click on the KCAW2K.wll file and click Open.

3.       On the hard drive open the Microsoft Office> Office> Start Up folder; look for and remove any potentially conflicting macros.

4.       If the above don’t help and the computer has Norton Antivirus, un-register a known conflicting file:

a.       Click on Start then Search.

b.       Search for a file named officeav.dll  and when found, delete it from the hard drive. This information was obtained from www.symantec.com, the maker of Norton Antivirus.

Issue:   Error "Server threw an exception" when opening Word XP (2002)

Solution:   The computer is also running Norton Antivirus.  The Microsoft Word plug-in needs to be disabled.  This does not remove Norton Antivirus from the computer.  The following instructions are from the Norton Web site.

1.       Click on Start then Run and type the following using the default path Norton provided:

       C:\Windows\System\Regsvr32 -U C:\Program Files\Norton Antivirus\OfficeAV.dll

2.       If the path to Regsvr32 and OfficeAV.dll are not found, then click on Start then Search and search for these files on the computer.

3.       When they are found, re-key the above command using the correct path(s).

Issue:  Error “Cannot save this exercise in a report because the word processor file for this exercise was incorrectly named.”

Solution:   Potential causes and solutions for this error:

1.       Launching Word, then returning to KCA without typing anything - Word does not save a blank file.

2.       Entering the wrong filename or a keying error when changing the filename from 'practice' to 'student' – re-open the lesson and correct the file name.

3.       The Student Manual has multiple parts to the exercise – the student completes only part of the lesson in Word.  Normally the file is saved, unless it is blank or corrupt.
Example, Lesson 41 has students Save as student-41, student-41b and student-41c.  The student must save the highest document (student- 41c) to prevent the error.  If the student got this error, return to MS Word and choose to Save as student-41c and the error will go away.

4.       The data path is incorrect or became lost -

a.       If saving to the network, ensure it saves to the correct student data path.

b.       If saving to floppy disk, ensure the 'save to' location is in the KCADATA folder on the A: drive.

Issue:  Error “C++ Visual Basic”      OR
“RPC server” when opening MS Word or returning to KCA from Word

Solution:  This occurred with the first KCA3 release, version 3.0.0.118.  It was an issue with the macro that launches MS Word and returns to KCA.  This was fixed in a Maintenance Release.  To request the Maintenance Release, contact Software Support (click here for their information).  In the meantime, when launching MS Word have students pause shortly before typing.  Or, if the Title bar in MS Word is grayed, click anywhere in the document to make it the active window.

1.       Delete the corrupt macro on each workstation where this occurs.  To do it:

a.       Log into KCA and click on File then Word Processor.

b.       When MS Word opens click in order on:  Tools, Macro, and Security

c.       Set the macro security to low.

d.       Again, click on:  Tools, Macro and Security

e.       Highlight each GDPMacro and press the Delete button.

f.         Close the Macros window.

g.       Return to KCA by clicking on File then Exit.

h.       Log completely out of KCA and then re-launch it.

i.         You should now be able to open Word from KCA3.

2.       If the above doesn't work, the normal.dot file may also be corrupt and should be deleted.  This file automatically recreates when MS Word is launched again.  To do this:

a.       On Windows Vista or XP, click on  Start and Search, and type normal.dot as the file to look for.

b.       Click on More advanced Options, checkmark Search hidden files and folders and click on Search.

c.       When the file is found, highlight the filename and press Delete on the keyboard.

b.       On Windows 2000:  click Start > Find or Search > Files and Folders and type:  normal.dot

c.       When found, highlight the filename and delete it.

Issue:   Error Data belongs to another student.

Solution:   A student removed their data disk without logging out of KCA.  The next student inserted their data disk, continued in the KCA program, and then logged out.  This corrupted the student's files.  Students should always log out of KCA and then remove their data disks because the last KCA action bookmarks where students are.  If an incoming student finds KCA still up, logoff without inserting the data disk, and then login using the disk.

Issue:  “Data location already contains student data” when students try to login to KCA.

Solution:  This occurred with KCA version 3.1.0.130 installed to the hard drive, without Teacher Options, and students save to floppy disk.  Students initially add themselves to the program, and the error occurs when trying to login again.

Workaround:

1.      Install KCA to the hard drive with Teacher Options.

  1. The teacher must open Teacher Options and create classes, choosing Save to A: and un-checking the Connect to LAN box.
  2. This will eliminate the error and allow subsequent logins.
  3. Copy the Classes subdirectory to the hard drive on the other workstations.

If the student already used their data disk:

1.       Re-install KCA with Teacher Options and create classes per the above workaround.

2.       Get the student’s data disk and open the class in Teacher Options.

3.       Click the Student Options button and choose New student.

4.       When prompted, choose Yes  that you have the student data disk.

5.       Insert the data disk when prompted and click OK.

6.       The student will be added to the class and lesson data will remain on the floppy disk.
