| GENERAL ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS: |
||
| |
||
| Issue: Click here for information regarding PowerPoint
Viewer 2003 |
||
| |
||
| Solution: If
PowerPoint Viewer 97 isn’t working you can download PowerPoint Viewer
2003 for free from the Microsoft website http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=428d5727-43ab-4f24-90b7-a94784af71a4&displaylang=en |
||
| |
||
| Solution: There are different versions of this program with
differences between the versions. The
version is loosely based on the copyright year listed on the CD (examples
6/02, 8/04).
·
CD’s with a 2002 copyright year generally
do not have an automatic installer whereas more recent versions may
have.
·
CD’s with a 2002 or 2004 copyright generally
aren’t added to Start/Programs whereas more recent versions are added
to the Start/Programs menu for Windows only. Click here
for instructions on accessing the files. |
||
| Issue: Is this program networkable? |
||
| |
||
| Solution: No. The
CD is required in the CD drive. |
||
| Issue: Is there a user’s guide? |
||
| |
||
| Solution: On older
versions there is. It is on the Interactive CD-ROM and is named User’s
Guide.pdf. On some CD-ROMs it is in the Extras folder. On newer
versions there isn’t always a User’s Guide on the CD. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: If using
PowerPoint 2000, the presentation appears to freeze when viewing, but
is actually loading into memory, which may take a minute or more. To alleviate this, use the PowerPoint Viewer
included in the “Media Installers” folder on the CD. |
||
| Issue: Presentation is difficult to read when displayed on a screen |
||
| |
||
| Solution:
§
Display the image on a reflective surface
instead of a blackboard or other similar surface.
§
Try using a better screen to improve
the display quality.
§
Darken the room if possible.
§
Check the quality of the projector as
this also impacts display quality. |
||
| |
||
| Solution:
§
Exit the slide show and start the presentation
at the beginning again.
§
To begin presentation again:
Press the Home key, scroll to the first slide, and choose
Slide Show in the View menu.
§
Macintosh only: If not resolved, click
here to increase memory settings. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: The monitor setting should be set at high-color
(16-bit) or better. Monitors
set at 256-colors result in poor onscreen images. |
||
| Issue: Portions of the screen do not update while viewing a presentation |
||
| |
||
| Solution: The ideal screen display setting is 800x600
or higher. Windows: Some
video drivers have problems displaying full-color slides in 800x600
or higher. An update to your
video driver may be available from the equipment vendor.
If updating the video driver does not correct the problem, change
the resolution to 640x480, click here for instructions.
You may also have to change your projector
equipment to display in the same mode.
Macintosh:
§
Increase the memory settings for PowerPoint,
click here for instructions.
§
Change the screen resolution to 800x600
and thousands of colors. See the preceding Issue. |
||
| Issue: The text is not clear on the projected image, but is okay
on the monitor. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: The resolution for a projector needs to match
the screen resolution for the monitor.
Example: if the monitor
is set for 800x600, the text may look squeezed on a projected image. Refer to your projector's manual for instructions
on setting the display resolution. |
||
| Issue: When the program displays a new slide, the mouse pointer
does not immediately appear. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: This is a function of PowerPoint. After a new slide appears, move the mouse
a few times to get the pointer to appear.
In PowerPoint the mouse doesn't show until you move it. |
||
| Issue: Long delays occur randomly when viewing presentations |
||
| |
||
| Solution:
§
You may want to turn off the AutoRecover
feature.
o
Windows: Choose Options from the Tools menu,
select the Save tab, and turn off AutoRecover or AutoSave.
o
Macintosh: Choose Preferences from the Edit menu, select
the Save tab, and turn off the option.
§
Saving files may require a few moments as presentations
are large. If viewing a presentation
at the time, the slide show seems not to respond. Even though you are viewing a slide, PowerPoint
autosaves any open files.
§
Clicking the Connect button may cause a delay.
This button launches the browser, dials (if needed), and connects
to the Glencoe Web site. Based on computer speed, a few minutes may
be needed. |
||
| Issue: How
to change the screen resolution and colors |
||
| |
||
| Solution: Depending on the computer system and projector,
you may need to change the resolution to 800x600 and/or the colors to 16-bit: Windows: Right-click
the Desktop, choose Properties
then Settings, make changes, and click Apply. Macintosh: Click on Controls
Panel, Monitor, and change the settings (set colors
to thousands). |
||
| Issue: Difficulty displaying presentations stored on
a network drive or CD network server |
||
| |
||
| Solution: This program must be installed on each computer,
so running it from a network may cause noticeable delays. The delays
can be due to network speed, network traffic, or the server. See your network Administrator if you are
having problems. |
||
| Issue: Clicking the Connect button does not launch my Web browser. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: You must have Netscape 4.0 or Explorer 4.0
(or later) installed on the computer.
When clicking the Connect button, a minute or two may
be needed to connect to the Internet.
If there isn’t enough memory, the Web browser may not start properly
or may have connection problems. Quit
Interactive Chalkboard, manually launch your Web browser, and
then go to the Web site specified on the slide. |
||
| Issue: Memory Overflow Error appears
when printing slides Or Only part of a slide prints |
||
| |
||
| Solution: When printing slides with large art elements,
the printer may display a memory overflow error or only print part of
a slide. First, ensure you are
printing in black and white mode. Only
the most important information prints.
Background art should be turned off. If you added your own slides, this may not
be the case. To print slides with
all the art elements, the printer may need more memory added, see the
printer's manual for this information:
§
Windows: Choose
Black and White from the View menu. Then right-click an object and set its black
and white format. You can also
try to set the Print What:
field in the Print dialog box.
Also, you can choose to print handouts (2 or 3 per page) to alleviate
printing problems.
§
Macintosh: Choose Grayscale
from the View menu, next CTRL+Click an object, and set its grayscale
format. Example, you can choose
not to show an object in grayscale mode.
Also, you can print handouts (2 or 3 per page) to alleviate printing
problems. |
||
| Issue: Slide show does not work properly after making changes to a
presentation |
||
| |
||
| Solution: Interactive Chalkboard slide shows often
have hyperlinks and action settings.
Do not delete or change them.
To check for missing slides, use Slide Sorter view to
see several slides at a time. All presentations use
the custom show feature on the buttons at the bottom of slides. You should know how custom shows work before
changing slides. Example, if
you add a slide to one of the parts, you must also update the corresponding
custom show list so PowerPoint knows how to display the new slide. |
||
| Issue: Can I customize a presentation
or edit a slide? |
||
| |
||
| Solution: The full PowerPoint software program is
required in order to customize a presentation. To customize follow these
steps:
1.
Insert the Interactive Chalkboard CD-ROM
and save the presentation file, which you want to customize, to your
desktop.
2.
Open your full version of PowerPoint
and then open the file you saved to your desktop.
3.
Customize the presentation and then
save the file. For problems customizing a presentation, assistance
is available by searching the online support database at the Microsoft
Web site at: http://www.microsoft.com/
If you have PowerPoint 2003 you first need to download and install a critical
update from Microsoft. It is critical update
828041 on the Microsoft website at: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=828041 After installing
the critical update then follow the same instructions above for customizing
your presentation. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: Only
if you are viewing the presentation files in the full version of PowerPoint. To accomplish this in the full version click
File/Print/Select Handouts from the "Print What" drop-down
and then the print button. |
||
| Issue: When I create my own slide/presentation it
is only printing in
color. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: Save
the slide/presentation as a PowerPoint 97-2002 & 95 Presentation
(*.ppt) file. To do this:
1.
Start your full version of PowerPoint.
2.
Access the slide or presentation you created.
3.
Click File and Save As.
4.
In the Save as Type field choose PowerPoint 97-2002
& 95 Presentation (*.ppt) and click Save. |
||
| Issue: Will this program run on Windows XP, 2000, NT 4.0,
ME and Macintosh OSX? |
||
| |
||
| Solution: Cursory testing performed on Windows XP,
2000, NT 4.0 and ME, "Our
customer base uses a wide variety of operating systems and applications,
and our software must be developed to be used on some lower end systems
to meet customer needs. Because
of this, we cannot guarantee that our software will always work as expected
as new operating systems and other applications are developed. We encourage you to give our products a 'test
drive' on any new system you plan to implement. If you are not satisfied with the performance
of our product, we will do our best to deliver a compatible product
to you in a timely manner or refund your money." |
||
| Issue: I created
my own slide show. When I copy an existing slide that contains a video
into my slide show, the video doesn’t work. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: The issue is occurring because the presentation
does not know where to find the corresponding movie files (they could
be .mov; .mpg; .avi; .swf etc…).
1.
Create a folder on your desktop for the new presentation
you’re working on.
2.
If you are using a PowerPoint slide from the existing
chapter slide show, copy the slides you’ll be using into the new folder
you just created on your desktop.
3.
Open your Interactive Chalkboard CD and then the chapter
folder you are working on.
4.
In that folder there may be a mov folder or the files may be at the root of the chapter folder.
5.
Copy the movie files from the Interactive Chalkboard
CD and paste them into the folder on your desktop. NOTE: If you are using existing PowerPoint slides in your
new presentation, then:
a.
Check to see if the files are in a mov
folder (or whatever the name of the folder may be) on the CD.
b.
If they are in a certain folder on the
CD then create a folder using the same name inside your new desktop
folder.
c.
Copy the movie files from the CD into
the new secondary folder. For
example if you open the chapter 5 folder on the CD and there is a “mov”
folder, which contains the movie
files you want to use, then you need to create a “mov” folder inside
the main slide show folder you are creating.
Then copy the movie files from the Interactive Chalkboard CD
into the mov folder inside your new presentation folder.
6.
Try the presentation. |
||
WINDOWS ISSUES |
||
| Issue: Receiving an IKernal error. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: If
you have a full version of PowerPoint try this:
1.
Start PowerPoint first.
2.
Click on File, Open.
3.
Browse to the CD and open a PowerPoint file. If you don’t have a
full version of PowerPoint then install and use the PowerPoint Viewer
program included on the CD. The install file should be in the Media
Installer folder on the CD. Start
the Viewer, click on File, Open, browse to the CD and open a PowerPoint
file. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: This worked for some customers:
1.
Log onto the workstation as an administrator,
install the program and then launch the program.
2.
Open the WinNT or Windows folder (whichever
was listed in the error) on the workstation’s hard drive.
3.
Two XOBGLU.dll files should be in this folder.
Copy both files to the desktop.
4.
Exit our software program, which erases
those two files from the WinNT/Windows, folder.
5.
Copy the two XOBGLU.dll files back into the WinNT/
Windows folder.
6.
Mark the two files as Read-Only
7.
Log off the workstation and log back
on as a restricted user, for example a student account.
a.
Open the WinNT/ Windows folder and see
if the two XOBGLU.dll files
are still there. If they are then try running our program.
b.
If the files aren’t there or you try
to open the program and get the error again then the only other solution
is to make all users of this program PowerUsers. |
||
| Issue: Physics Principles
and Practices. Nothing happens when I click on the image to play a movie. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: The Interactive Chalkboard CDs for Physics P&P,
has two types of movie formats, .mov (QuickTime) and .swf (Flash). This
issue refers to the Flash movies. The hyperlink in the presentation
files seems to point to an invalid or empty file on the CD, which is
used to redirect to the corresponding Flash movie. To correct
this problem:
1.
Copy the desired “chapter x” folder
from the CD to the local hard drive (where “x” refers to the chapter
number).
2.
Open the “Chapxx.ppt” file (where “xx”
refers to the chapter number).
3.
Go to the slide that contains the movie
that does not play.
4.
Right-click on the image, and choose
Edit Hyperlink.
5.
In the address line, the file name will
appear (i.e. anim1-2_index.html).
6.
Change the “index” portion of the filename
to “main”, leaving the rest of the filename the same. (i.e. anim1-2_main.html).
7.
Click OK.
8.
Go to the File menu, and choose Save. |
||
| Issue: When opening PowerPoint
presentation files with PowerPoint Viewer 2003, I get a message that
the file is corrupted or that it cannot be read. Will this program work with PowerPoint 2003? |
||
| |
||
| Solution: This
program will work with PowerPoint 2003 only if you download and install
a Microsoft Office critical update, details are given below. For the file being
corrupted or not being readable message editorial brought it to our
attention. This happens because the PowerPoint slides were created with
an earlier PowerPoint version. Solution one - Install
the PowerPoint Viewer 97 or 98 included on the Interactive Chalkboard
CD-ROM, and use that to open the PowerPoint Presentation files on the
CD-ROM. The installation file
for PowerPoint Viewer 97 or 98 is in the folder named Media Installers on the CD-ROM.
To access it:
1.
Insert the Interactive Chalkboard CD-ROM.
2.
Click on My Computer and then your CD-ROM drive so
you can see the files on the CD-ROM.
3.
Open the Media Installers folder.
4.
Click on the PPView97.exe
or PPView98.exe file and
the installation will begin.
5.
Follow the onscreen instructions to finish the PowerPoint
Viewer 97 (or 98) installation. Solution two - Download and install Microsoft Office critical update 828041
from the Microsoft website http://support.microsoft.com/?id=828041
this will alleviate the errors. |
||
| Issue: How do I launch the program after it is installed? OR After installing
the program I don’t see it listed under Start / Programs (Windows only). |
||
| |
||
| Solution: There are
different versions of this program. The CD’s with a copyright year of
03 does put an icon under Start/Programs.
However other versions (generally 02 or 04 copyrights) don’t
put a shortcut put under Start/Programs. The Interactive Chalkboard
CD contains PowerPoint presentations that can be opened with PowerPoint
Viewer or the full version of PowerPoint.
To access the presentation files: To view a presentation that does not add a link under
Start/Programs:
1.
Insert the CD-ROM.
2.
If a window doesn’t open to show you the contents of the CD, then: Windows: Click on My Computer and open your CD-ROM drive. Macintosh: Click on CD-ROM to open it.
3.
Double-click on one of the PowerPoint files and the PowerPoint Viewer
program will launch. For
copyrights that install under Start/Programs (Windows only) if you only
want to view the presentation:
1.
Insert the CD-ROM.
2.
Click on Start, Programs, Interactive
Chalkboard and click the name of your book. A
full version of PowerPoint must be installed to make changes to a presentation for all versions on Windows or Macintosh:
1.
With the CD in the drive, launch PowerPoint and click on File / Open.
2.
Select the CD drive and then a chapter presentation.
3.
Click the View menu
and select the Slide Show option to begin the presentation.
4.
When the presentation starts, and you
see an opening slide, click the Forward button.
5.
At the Contents slide
click the appropriate hyperlink to view the lesson slides.
6.
Click the Help button
for detailed instructions.
7.
To end the presentation, click the Exit
button or press the Escape key. For issues regarding customizing a presentation,
assistance is available by searching the online support database at
the Microsoft Web site at: http://www.microsoft.com/
|
||
| Issue: Right-clicking the mouse button does not move backward. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: Using the Viewer, click the Options
button that appears when the Viewer first starts. Change the settings so a right-click does
not display a pop-up menu. For
PowerPoint 97, click on Tools, Options, and the View tab. Turn the setting off so the pop-up menu doesn’t
appear when right-clicking. |
||
| Issue: The screen goes black when you attempt to view the show. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: PowerPoint 2000 loads the entire presentation
into memory when you begin to view the show. This causes a delay of
up to a minute or two when starting a presentation. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: Windows:
PowerPoint 97 SP-1, or later. Macintosh:
PowerPoint 98 or later. If you don’t have this
version or later you can install a free PowerPoint Viewer program from
the Interactive Chalkboard CD. It should be located in the Media Installer folder. You
can also search for a free PowerPoint Viewer program on the Microsoft
website at http://www.microsoft.com/. |
||
MACINTOSH ISSUES
|
||
| ISSUE: I’ve been using the Interactive Chalkboard on Macintosh and the
links stopped working. |
||
| |
||
| SOLUTION: Check to see if the automatic update option
is active for your Microsoft Office program. If your Office program
has recently been updated to Version 11.2.4, then that is what probably
caused the problem. We suggest that you reinstall the earlier version
of Office and disable automatic updates. We are working with the vendor
who is investigating other options to resolve the problem. |
||
| |
||
| Solution:
This is due to the text box
not being transparent.
1.
Click on Format on the pull-down menu.
2.
Select Textbox from the list of choices.
3.
Click on the Color drop-down menu and
select light gray. Now the Transparency indicator is active.
4.
Drag the Transparency indicator all
the way to the right (to 100%).
5.
Click the OK button. Now the letters
will appear in the textbox. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: Those equations
will only appear correctly when using PowerPoint 2004 for Mac O.S.
X. There is not a PowerPoint Viewer that will
run natively in OS X, so the only option is to use the full version
of PowerPoint 2004. |
||
| Issue: I am not able to view the movies embedded in
the slides. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: Try
using the PowerPoint Viewer program that is included on the CD-ROM. If that doesn’t help the newer Office 2003 has a problem opening all Office files saved in a previous version of Office, not just Power Point files. The links below includes information and a patch from the Microsoft website.
Technical Info: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=828041
|
||
| |
||
| Solution: The
installer was left off of some CD’s. On the CD-ROM open the folder MAC
PowerPoint 98 Viewer and check that the installation file is missing.
If it is missing it can be downloaded for free from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e25cb1e5-209c-4a58-b283-23e84b616477&displaylang=en |
||
| |
||
| Solution: The two PowerPoint versions that are OS X
native are PowerPoint X and PowerPoint 2004, check to see if you have
either of those versions. There
is not a PowerPoint Viewer program that is OS X native. Another option may
be to restart the computer in System 9.x.
To do this, click System Preferences
in the Apple menu and choose Mac OS 9.x. |
||
| Issue: ‘Memory error’ or “Low on system resources” Presentation does not run smoothly or How to increase memory settings |
||
| |
||
| Solution: Increase the memory settings for PowerPoint
or the PowerPoint Viewer. To do it:
1.
Click on Finder, then the PowerPoint
or PowerPoint Viewer application on the hard
drive.
2.
Click File, Get Info, then Memory.
3.
Increase the Minimum and Preferred
memory settings to at least 24000 K.
4.
In the Memory Control Panel, ensure Virtual
Memory is turned on. |
||
| Issue: I cannot find
or start the Help program. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: The CD must be in the CD drive to use this
function. |
||
| |
||
| Solution: This can happen if the On OS X - click the
Question mark at the bottom of the slide, then click Enable Macros. |
||
