This program offers interactive virtual labs, chapter quizzes, and resources to build presentations. The virtual labs give students new ways to learn science using interactive CD-ROM technology

 

ISSUES:

 

General

The program doesn’t launch when I double-click on its icon or alias.

 

The program takes a long time to launch.

 

Audio or video sputters during playback.

 

Playback sound is too loud or too soft.

 

Printer is not working.

 

The Glencoe folder doesn’t appear on the Programs Menu.

 

While viewing the Chapter Presentations that came with the program; the audio button will not work.

 

Where are the presentations saved?

 

While trying to complete Chapter 4’s Exploration, students are unable to build the strand.

Windows:

  • IBM-compatible Pentium/90 MHz
  • Windows 95, 98, NT 4 w/Service Pack 6a, or 2000
  • 16 MB RAM
  • 10 MB free hard drive space
  • 4x CD-ROM drive
  • QuickTime 2.1.1 (included on CD-ROM)
  • SVGA monitor, 640x480
  • 256 color
  • Speakers
  • Mouse
  • Printer recommended

 

MAC:

  • Power Macintosh
  • System 7.5.3 or higher
  • 16 MB RAM
  • 10 MB free hard drive space
  • 4x CD-ROM drive
  • QuickTime 3.0 (included on CD-ROM) or later
  • 13-inch/8-bit color monitor using full-screen resolution
  • Mouse
  • Printer recommended

INSTALLATION TIPS:

 

Windows:

  1. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Double-click the icon for your CD-ROM drive.
  3. Double-click SETUP.EXE.
  4. Click Next to continue.
  5. Click Next to accept the default location or click Browse to select a different one.
  6. To complete installation and view the Read Me, click the Read Me box, and then click Finish.

    Note about QuickTime: If you use Windows, QuickTime 2.1.1 is necessary to run the Interactive CD-ROM. If you have a later version of QuickTime already installed, you still need to install QuickTime 2.1.1. 
  1. From the Start button on the task bar, point to Programs.
  2. Point to Glencoe and select Install QuickTime.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions.
  4. When QuickTime installation is complete, restart your computer.

 

Macintosh:

  1. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Double-click the Installer icon.
  3. To save or print the Read Me before continuing click Save As or Print.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Click Install.
  6. Click Continue to perform additional installations, or click Quit to exit the installer.

 

Note about QuickTime: If you use Macintosh, the Interactive CD-ROM will run using either QuickTime 3.0 or 4.0. This CD includes QuickTime 3.0.

 

  1. If QuickTime 3.0 or 4.0 is not already installed on your computer, open the QuickTime Mac Installer folder.
  2. Click the Installer icon. Follow the onscreen instructions.
  3. When QuickTime installation is complete, restart your computer.

ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS:

 

Issue:  The program doesn’t launch when I double-click on its icon or alias.

 

Solution:  Make sure the CD is in the CD-ROM drive. Quit all open programs, including screen savers.  Make sure you have at least 11,700KB of RAM. Or, consider launching a different CD program (not a Glencoe Product CD) to determine if it is a hardware problem.

 

If all this was done and the program still won’t launch; make sure the program is fully installed.

 

Windows:  Double-click the CD-ROM drive and then double-click the Setup.exe icon.

Macintosh:  Double-click the CD-ROM drive, and then double-click the Installer for the grade you want.

Issue:  The program takes a long time to launch.

 

Solution:  The program normally launches within one minute. If it takes longer, make sure you have at least 11,700KB of RAM. If needed, refer to your computer’s user manual or contact Software Support to learn how to free additional memory.

Issue:  Audio or video sputters during playback.

 

Solution:  Quit all programs, including screen savers. Make sure you have at least 11,700KB of RAM. If needed, refer to your computer’s user manual or contact Software Support to learn how to free additional memory.

 

Note: Video played from a CD-ROM application will not play as smoothly as videotape.

 

If you continue to experience problems with audio or video, make sure QuickTime has been fully installed.

 

Windows: Make sure QuickTime 2.1.1 has been installed. For help, click here.

 

Macintosh:  Open the System Folder and then open the Extensions folder to make sure it includes QuickTime 3.0 or higher. If it doesn’t, click here.

Issue:  Playback sound is too loud or too soft.

 

Solution:  Make sure your speakers and headphones are plugged in and set at an appropriate volume.

Issue:  Printer is not working.

 

Solution:  Make sure the printer is plugged in and turned on. Print from another application to determine if the problem is hardware related.  Check with your school’s system administrator or hardware technician to check whether the correct printer drivers for your system have been installed.

Issue:  The Glencoe folder doesn’t appear on the Programs Menu.

 

Solution: 

 

 Windows: From the Start button on the taskbar, point to Programs. Make sure the Glencoe folder appears. If it doesn’t, click here.

 

Macintosh:  Open the System folder and then open the Extensions folder to ensure the following extensions are turned on: CD-ROM, QuickTime PowerPlug, General Controls, and any printer extension required by the printer in use.

 

To check extensions:

  1. Click on Apple.
  2. Click on Control panel.
  3. Click on Extensions manager.

Issue: While viewing the Chapter Presentations that came with the program; the audio button will not work.

 

Solution:  When the screen captures were created for the program, the audio button was not removed. It is in operable.

Issue: Where are the student presentations saved?

 

Solution: They are saved onto the hard drive in the MHProducts directory. Please see the example below.

 

ie: C:\MHProducts\NAME OF BOOK\PreBuild

Issue: While trying to complete Chapter 4’s Exploration, students are unable to build the strand.

 

Solution: The joining piece of code must line directly up w/the already existing piece. If you try and place it in the little circle off to the right, it will not accept it.

Issue:  Will this program work on Windows NT, ME, 2000 and XP?

 

Solution:  Cursory testing was performed and no problems were found.

 

Note to Windows 2000 and XP users: This program was tested as Power User.

 

Our customer base uses a wide variety of operating systems and applications and our software must be developed to be used on some lower end systems to meet our customer needs. Because of this, we cannot guarantee that our software will always work as expected as new operating systems and other applications are developed. We encourage you to give our products a 'test drive' on any new system you plan to implement. If you are not satisfied with the performance of our products, we will do our best to deliver a compatible product to you in a timely manner or refund your money.

Solution:  This program is not designed for O/S X. However, it will run in Classic Mode.
