GKC
is a middle school keyboarding and computer applications program for use on
both Windows and Macintosh computers. GKC has school and home versions. Student Guides
are only available for MS Office 2000 and 2002 (XP). Student
exercises are stored in a local hard disk subdirectory, a floppy disk, or in
a directory on a network drive.
Teacher Options allow controlling certain student settings, setting up
and managing class files, modifying student logon information, and monitoring
student progress. |

Solution: Cursory
testing performed on Windows Vista and Intel Mac machines have not revealed
any issues. Note: Testing on Windows Vista and Intel Mac was performed as a Power User only. Our customers
use a wide variety of operating systems and applications, and our software
must be developed to be used on some lower end systems to meet customer
needs. Because of this, we cannot
guarantee our software will always work as expected as new operating systems
and other applications are developed.
We encourage you to give our products a 'test drive' on any new system
you plan to implement. If you are not
satisfied with the performance of our product, we will do our best to deliver
a compatible product to you in a timely manner or refund your money. |

Issue: Where can student data
be stored using the campus version? |
Solution: Student data can be saved to floppy disk or
a network drive. The location is set when
adding a new class in Teacher Management.
The network location saves to the GKC\CLASSES
folder. |
Issue: For a standalone installation, how do I use Teacher
Options? |
Solution: If students use GKC on stand-alone
workstations and the instructor wants to track their progress on the
teacher’s workstation, then students must store their work on data disks. Setting up the teacher’s
workstation: 1. Open GKC and go into Teacher Options by clicking Options then Teacher Options. 2. If there are no classes, click Add a New Class, add a class name and select Store student data on floppy disk. 3. Highlight the class name then click on View Student List. 4. Click on Add
New Student, and click Yes when
prompted whether you have the student’s data disk. 5. Their lessons will upload and can be viewed in
Teacher Options without the data disk. Update student data in Teacher Options: 1. To view new lessons, periodically collect the students’
disks and go into Teacher Options. 2. Click on the Student Name and click Edit Student Information. 3. When the window opens, click Save. 4. When prompted for the data disk click Yes.
5. The new lessons will be added, and can be viewed in
Teacher Options. |
Solution: Yes.
If the students save to: ·
Floppy disks -
make a copy of the disk regularly. ·
The local hard
drive or network drive – regularly make a back-up copy of the Classes
subdirectory. |
Solution: The first release of GKC has no way to
disable or prevent students from self-registration when using the school
version. It will be considered when
GKC is updated. |
Issue: How do I transfer |
Solution: Students cannot be transferred. Add them as a new student to the new class. |
Issue: Where are the Word documents students are supposed to use in the
lessons? |
Solution: The files are on the Teacher Courseware CD
inside the Projects folder. |
Issue: "Try this function when the student is logged
off" when editing |
Solution: GKC uses the GKCINUSE.DAT file to determine
if a user is logged in. The only
reason the message would occur is if that file is locked, corrupt or not
readable. ·
Delete the
file and see if it eliminates the error message. This file will be recreated by GKC. ·
Double check
to ensure they have read/write access to the Classes folder and its subfolders. |

Program
Errors and Issues |
Solution: GKC cannot find the data directory
specified for student data. Make sure the
shortcut for the icon used to start GKC includes the full and correct path to
the student data files. Use Teacher
Options to verify that the student data location is correct for the class. In either case, verify that student data
files and directories have not been moved or deleted. |
Issue: Error 6001 14 “Unable to
load GKC log file. Reason: the end of the file was reached.” |
Solution: The log file is
the StudentName.gkl
file. Some possible explanations for what is happening here, are:
If a back-up
is maintained, copy it into the student folder on the network or floppy
disk. Otherwise, have the student
login as new, using a slightly altered login name. |
Issue: Error 6004 2, “Unable to load GKC Summary Report file. The
file could not be located.” |
Solution: The file that is named as student’s LastName_FirstName.gks is corrupt or missing. Trying to view this student’s reports in Teacher Options will result in a
message that “This student has not completed any exercises.” ·
If a back-up
is kept of the Classes
subdirectory, replace this student’s .gks file, and they should be able to login. The student will need to redo any lessons
after the last back-up. ·
If there is no
back-up, have the student login as New
using a slightly different name. |
Solution: This is a corrupt Summary Report file which
is named StudentName.gks. If a back-up is maintained, copy the back-up
file into the student folder on the network or floppy disk. Otherwise, have the student login as new, using a slightly altered login name. |
Solution: This can be caused by insufficient
permissions. |
Issue: Students cannot
access GKC when they previously could |
Solution: On a LAN install, this may occur if an
instructor is working in Teacher Options while students are trying to log
into GKC. ·
Teacher
Options should not be open when students login. If it is open, exit Teacher Options. ·
Teachers
should not try to make changes when any students in that class are logged in. |
Solution: The maximum number of exercises that can be
listed on a Summary Report is 500.
When the Summary Report exceeds 500 exercises, the program
automatically overwrites exercises starting with the oldest first. If you want to keep the oldest exercises as
well, make a copy of the data, then continue using the program. |
Issue: The maximum number of
Detailed Reports has been reached. |
Solution: A maximum of 200 Detailed Reports can be
accessible from a Summary Report. When
the maximum is reached, the GKC makes room for new Detailed Reports by
overwriting Detailed Reports, starting with the oldest. If you want to keep the old exercises, make
a copy of the data, then continue using the program. |
Issue: GKC fails to start the word processor, presentations, spreadsheet or
database software. |
Solution: The application location set in the class
settings is incorrect, other than the default, or the location is for a
different version of the program.
Ensure the path is set to the correct version of Microsoft Office. Both Microsoft Office 2000 and XP (2002)
are compatible with GKC. ·
School version
- select Options / Teacher Options, and enter the teacher
password. Choose the class, select Edit
Class Settings, and ensure the path for the
Office application is correct. ·
Home version –
select Options then Settings and edit the class
settings. Default setting for
Microsoft Word 2002 (XP): C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\winword.exe Default setting for
Microsoft Word 2000: same as above except
remove the 10 from \Office10\ |
Issue: Template files in
the Projects folder are not Read-only and should be. |
Solution: These are the Microsoft Office lessons in
the big book and occur in both the School and Home versions. Students must browse to the Projects
folder to use the template files. By
default, this folder is located inside the GKC directory. 1. Using Windows Explorer or My Computer, locate the GKC
folder on the network or hard drive.
2. Right-click the Projects folder located
inside the GKC (campus version) or GKC-Home directory. If any of the files were modified, simply
replace those files, or the entire directory folder, from the Projects/GKC-Home
folder located on the CD. 3. Select Properties from the dropdown menu,
and checkmark the Read-Only box. 4. If prompted whether this applies to all
files/subdirectories, answer Yes. |
Solution: Practice documents,
warm-ups, new key presentations, and certain practice and skillbuilding
exercises are not supposed to be scored.
To score one of the documents manually, have students print their
documents in Word or from the Reports window. |
Solution: The text is in the Teacher Courseware Manual, Chapter 6. Instructors need to print and give the text
to students. ISBNs for the Teacher
Courseware Manuals are: |
Solution: The student did not follow word wrap
settings indicated in the exercise header.
Have the student key the exercise following the word wrap setting in
the exercise header. ·
A “<¶>”
error scores when word wrap is off and the student doesn’t press Enter
at the end of the line. A “{¶}” error
scores when word wrap is on and the student mistakenly presses Enter
at the end of the line. |
Issue: No sound plays at the
end of timings or when the restart period is over for a timing. |
Solution: GKC uses the computer’s default sound to
signal the end of timings and the end of the restart period. Make sure the there is an audible sound
assigned to Default Sound and the volume is not muted. |
Issue: What are the GKC files? |
Solution: The file structure is as follows: ·
Log file is
·
Summary Report file is ·
Detailed Report file is o
Files 001.DRP through 020.DRP are for Unit 1 o
Files 021.DRP through 034.DRP are for Unit 2 o
File 201.DRP is the Unit 1 Test o
File 202.DRP is the Unit 2 Test ·
gkctrace.log – bookmarks the lesson during logout. It will be recreated if deleted or removed. ·
GKCINUSE.DAT – this file should be 0 KB. It was designed to prevent other files from
becoming corrupt. If deleted, moved or
corrupt, it will recreate itself. |
Issue: Can GKC be installed on the hard drive and save student
lessons to the network? |
Solution: Currently, there is no support for an
alternate classes location. This
capability exists in the Keyboarding with Computer Applications program for
Windows that is normally used by high schools. |
Solution: No.
CDs are designed to be written sequentially (in single or multi
sessions). Storing student data
requires random access to the storage media. |
Solution: ·
Underlined in red indicate
incorrect words. ·
<Green in angle brackets> indicate
omitted words, tabs (designated as <[T]>), and hard returns (designated as <¶ >). ·
{Blue in braces} indicate
incorrectly inserted words, tabs (designated as {[T]}), and hard returns (designated as {¶}). |

Issue: Word 2002 does not launch
when Norton Anti-Virus is installed. |
Solution:
A known conflict exists between Word
2002 and Norton Anti-Virus. Norton is
expected to correct this issue in a subsequent release. Windows Unregister Norton Anti-virus (NAV): The Norton
website provided the below fixes on its website. These unregister
NAV, do not remove the anti-virus program, and NAV still provides
protection. Disabling NAV depends on
the version on the PC: NAV
2000: Click on Start, Run. Win
95/98 command: regsvr32 /U "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeAV.dll" Win 95/98 w/SystemWorks, same command
as above except in place of \norton
antivirus\ Win NT/2000 command: "regsvr32
/U "c:\program files\navnt\oficeav.dll" If successful, this message appears:
"DllUnregisterServer in
C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\OfficeAV.dll succeeded." If unsuccessful, search/find the file
named 'officeav.dll' and write down the path. Then unregister
again, typing the statement again, changing the path in quotation marks
(") to the one you wrote down. NAV 2001: Start NAV, click Options then General. In the MS Office 2000 plug-in
section, UNCHECK Enable Office plug-in, and click OK. NAV 2002 or Office XP: Start NAV,
click Options then Miscellaneous. In How to keep MS documents protected
section, UNCHECK Enable Office plug-in, and click OK. Macintosh Unregister the Officeav.dll of Norton
