This program is comprised of 3 main components. These components are the software to use with the textbook: Peachtree®, Multimedia, and the AICPA Room Zoom. Accounting concepts are introduced and demonstrated through interactive games, lesson-based activities, case studies, spreadsheet applications and quizzes. Classes can be setup for both first year and advanced students.

Electronic Learning Center:

Will this program run on Windows 2000, XP and Vista?

Why does the program take so long to launch?

I have installed the ELC, but the Real-World Multimedia and AICPA Room Zoom are not active on the ELC screen.

After launching the program, an error appears: Not A Valid Floating Point Value.

Peachtree:

What version of Peachtree is used?

Where are the templates for the chapter problems, mini simulations and full simulations?

My student has forgotten their password.

Error: File Access Denied.

The word Formula appears in all of the Excel spreadsheets, but it does not calculate the information for the student.

I have activated the formulas in the management program, but I still see the word Formula.

“Cannot open options.dat” and the computer freezes when trying to launch Peachtree.

“Cannot write to gai.ini” when using a hard drive security program (Fortres or FoolProof).

”Code Based Error or -60” when launching a Peachtree problem is opened.

When clicking on Tutorials, it says please insert the CD-ROM.  It should open from the network, but even if I put the CD-ROM in the drive, it still does not work.

“Error 60 & Error 90165 Opening file/File 4 open “Glencoe Directory to Roster.dbf””. Followed by “Error 935/Error 94410/Null input parameter unexpected Relate 4 init”, and finally a GPF.

“Btrieve Version 5.10 is too old.”

When using the solution option, I get a message “Problem does not belong to the student.”

My Teacher’s Utility Disk is not working, what can I do as a workaround?

System 1020 File C:\PTRIAL\1General.dat

My student’s work has disappeared and cannot be found.

The Electronic Learning Center is installed as standalone, but when the students go to another computer they get the message “Problem Belongs to Another Student”.

Has the program been updated? What was fixed and what is still wrong?

Problem 22-7 is not correct.

Problem 20-8 does not have Save Pre-Closing Balances.

What are the CD-ROM dates and version numbers?

Will this program work on Citrix/Thin Client/Terminal Servers?

The problem on page 737 states: Partners’ capital accounts are Debited for $5000; this is incorrect.

The problem on page 293 states: “Accounts Receivable – Controlling Account”.

Is there a way for the teacher to control or clear the balances and postings in the Peachtree problems?

The Canyon Mini-Practice on page 179 is showing the wrong date.

There is a problem with Step 7 of Problem 11-8.

The Glencoe Smart Guide is not appearing once a Peachtree Problem is opened.

The Accounts Receivable and/or Accounts Payable sections are not appearing in Peachtree.

When a student tries to restart the Outer Banks Simulation on a standalone computer; he receives an error “The problem you started before cannot be accessed. Previous work cannot be found.”

When I try to add an Inventory Adjustment within Mini Practice Set 2, the Item ID box is blank.

Error: “The free trial period for the Xceed encryption library has expired.” when accessing the PeachTree portion of the ELC Management System.

Issue:  Why does the program take so long to launch?

Solution:  The normal wait time for the program to launch is approximately 1 minute. If it takes longer, check to see that the computer has enough free RAM to run the program. By adding more RAM or shutting off non-essential programs, the launch time will decrease.

Issue:  I have installed the ELC, but the Real-World Multimedia and AICPA Room Zoom are not active on the ELC screen.

Solution:  The Real-World Multimedia and AICPA Room Zoom have separate installs on their CD-ROMs. These installations must be done before they will be active on the menu.

Issue: After launching the program, an error appears: Not A Valid Floating Point Value.

Solution: This is due to a corruption, but the cause is unknown. Completely uninstalling and reinstalling the program cleared the error.  Please be sure to back up the Studdata folder before reinstalling.

PEACHTREE:

Issue:  What version of Peachtree is used?

Solution:  The Electronic Learning Center uses Peachtree version 5.0 for Windows.

Issue:  Where are the templates for the chapter problems, mini simulations and full simulations?

Solution:  All of the templates are listed in the Accounting Management System. If you are not finding a template, make sure you are looking in the right accounting sequence (1st Year or Advanced). Each simulation (Adventure Travels, Outer Banks, and Digital Express) has its own user’s guide, student workbook and teacher manual.

Issue:  My student has forgotten their password.

Solution:  To locate a password:

1.       Log into the Accounting Management System as either the administrator or teacher.

2.       Go to the Student tab and select the student’s name.

3.       Click the Change button and view the student’s password.

Issue:  Error: File Access Denied.

Solution:  Please see below:

1.       Check to see if the customer has Fortres or Foolproof. If they do and they are trying to install, have them disable the protection program, restart and try again. If they are trying to access a template have them continue to click retry until it enters Peachtree or Excel.

2.       Receives error when trying to delete files or the System Administrator is denied rights to delete or view a file. Running Scandisk will correct the problem by repairing any damaged files and allowing the deletion of access denied files.

Issue:  The word Formula appears in all of the Excel spreadsheets, but it does not calculate the information for the student.

Solution:  This is a setting that is controlled in the Groups section. Please see below:

1.       Log into the Accounting Management System as either the administrator or teacher.

2.       Click on the Groups tab and select a group.

3.       Click the Change button and then the radio button next to Use Spreadsheets with Formulas.

4.       Click the OK button. Now everyone assigned to the group will now have the formulas in their spreadsheet applications.

Issue:  I have activated the formulas in the management program, but I still see the word Formula.

Solution:  If the teacher is logged in using a teacher or administrator account, they are not “officially” a part of a group and are unable to see the formulas. To actually see the formulas, they will need to create a student account for themselves and assign it to a group that has permission to see the formulas.

Issue:  “Cannot open options.dat” and the computer freezes when trying to launch Peachtree.

Solution:

1.       Reboot the computer.

2.       Turn off any anti-virus software.

3.       Delete all Electronic Learning Center software and reinstall.

4.       After installation, reboot the machine. This should fix the problem.

Issue:  “Cannot write to gai.ini” when using a hard drive security program (Fortres or FoolProof).

Solution:  Student must have access rights to read and write to the gai.ini file located in the Windows directory.

Issue:  Code Based Error or -60” when launching a Peachtree problem.

Solution:  This is normally due to more files being open than the operating system can handle. Please try the following:

1.       Shut down all programs that are running on your computer.

2.       Click on your Start button and then Run.

3.       Type sysedit in the Open box and then click OK.

4.       Find the window with the title config.sys and click on the title bar to bring it forward. There will be two values in this: Files= and Buffers=. Change the value of the files to 180 and the value of the buffers to 30.

5.       Click on the word file in the menu at the top of the window and then click Save.

6.       Close the sysedit windows and restart the computer.

Issue:  When clicking on Tutorials, it says please insert the CD-ROM.  It should open from the network, but even if I put the CD-ROM in the drive, it still does not work.

Solution:  During the installation, the customer should have clicked “No” to the question: “Do all your student workstations have CD-ROMs? If they do in fact have CD-ROM drives, you will need to reinstall at each workstation. If they do not have CD-ROM drives, there is nothing you can do to view the tutorials.

Issue:  My Teacher’s Utility Disk is not working, what can I do as a workaround?

Solution: See below for a work-around:

1.       Install the software

2.       Set-up a class on one computer

3.       Copy the Database folder to a floppy disk and then take the disk to each computer.

4.       Copy the Database folder from the floppy and replace the empty one on each computer.

Note: A revised Utility Disk was released and is dated 9-21-00 (version 2.0gl.0.2).

Issue:  System 1020 File C:\PTRIAL\1General.dat

Solution:  Lower hard drive security.

Issue:  My student’s work has disappeared and cannot be found.

Solution:  This issue occurs when saving work to a floppy disk. If students inadvertently save their work to the network once and then on subsequent times they save it to a floppy, the management system will always look to the network first for the latest file. If it finds it there, it doesn’t bother to look on the floppy disk.

The solution is to:

1.       Insure that any student who is affected by this issue has their latest work saved on the floppy.

2.       Have the teacher or network administrator go to the Studdata folder, where the accounting database files were installed, and delete the problem in question for each student. Or delete each student’s entire folder if all problems should be stored on floppy disks. You can tell which folder belongs to which student by looking in the Roster.dbf file.

Note:  This issue has been fixed in the new Peachtree Teacher’s CD-ROM dated 9-21-00 (version 1.0g1.0.2).

Issue:  The Electronic Learning Center is installed as standalone, but when the students go to another computer they get the message “Problem Belongs to Another Student”.

Solution: The Electronic Learning Center program assigns a different coded number to each student.  If teachers would like the ability to have students move around, they will need to use the Teacher’s Utility Disk. By using the utility disk, it will ensure the correct coded number will be used for each student.

Issue:  Has the program been updated? What was fixed and what is still wrong?

Solution:  Yes, both the Teacher’s CD-ROM and the Teacher’s Utility Disk have been updated.

Teacher’s Peachtree CD-ROM:

  • “Allow students to save to floppy drive only” option. When the administrator selects this option in the Accounting Management System, the program now looks to the network for problem templates.
  • Modified program to allow running tutorials from the CD-ROM whether Setup was run from the network or directly from the CD-ROM.
  • Problem 22-7 text answer files corrected, both in student Check Answers and the administrator answer template.
  • Problem 20-8 Smart Guide and problem now have Save Pre-Closing Balances.
  • Setup.exe: resized to accommodate different screen resolutions.

Teacher’s Utility Disk:

  • Now copies database to the disk.

Issue:  Problem 22-7 is not correct.

Solution:  The new Peachtree Teacher’s CD-ROM dated 9-21-00 corrects the issue in the student’s Check Answers section as well as the administrator’s Answer Template.

Issue:  Problem 20-8 does not have Save Pre-Closing Balances.

Solution:  Both the Smart Guide and problem now offer the option to save pre-closing balances on the new Peachtree Teacher’s CD (dated 9-21-00),

Issue:  The problem on page 737 states: “Partners’ capital accounts are DEBITED for $5000; this is incorrect.

Solution: The text should read “Partners’ capital accounts are CREDITED $5000...” This has been fixed in the 6th printing of the textbook.

Issue:  The problem on page 293 states: “Accounts RECEIVABLE – Controlling Account”.

Solution:  The text should read Accounts PAYABLES – Controlling Account. The point text is talking about Accounts Payables; the main account and Accounts Payables are the subsidiary accounts. This will be corrected in the reprint of the textbook.

Issue:  Is there a way for the teacher to control or clear the balances and postings in the Peachtree problems?

Solution:  Pre-programmed balances and postings are on the CD-ROM and cannot be erased or removed. However, the teacher can open the problem and erase the balances and postings then save the problem to a storage disk. Once this is done, the teacher should try opening the storage disc using the installed program or the 5.0 CD-ROM Peachtree program and work the problem.

Issue:  The Canyon Mini-Practice on page 179 is showing the wrong date.

Solution: The workbook, Form #5 (page 138) incorrectly lists the date of May 3rd. The correct date is May 7th.  This issue has been noted and will be fixed in the next reprint.

Issue:  There is a problem with Step 7 of Problem 11-8.

Solution:  Have the students do a journal entry in Peachtree to void the check and record the bank fee. The entry to void the check should be a debit to cash for $200 and a credit to the Maintenance and Repairs account for $200.

Note: There is a note below Step 3 on page 233 of the Chapter Review and Working Papers.

Issue:  The Accounts Receivable and/or Accounts Payable sections are not appearing in Peachtree.

Solution:  This is a feature in Peachtree that can be turned on and off (hidden). To fix this:

1.       Start Peachtree from within the Electronic Learning Center.

2.       Click on Options and then Global.

3.       Look under Hide General Ledger Accounts and uncheck the items you want to show (Accounts Receivable, Payable and Payroll Entry).

4.       Click the OK button and restart Peachtree.

Issue: Page 18 of the Adventure Travels book lists the June 10th entry invoice as being $56.97 but the answer key lists it as $56.88. Which is correct?

Solution: The answer key is correct. However, the invoice showing $56.97 is an intentional error.

Note:  The error is described on page 6 of the Teacher’s Manual. In Source Document 13, the supplier’s invoice contained an “error in extension and total.”

Issue: When a student tries to restart the Outer Banks Simulation on a standalone computer; he receives an error “The problem you started before cannot be accessed. Previous work cannot be found.”

Solution: This occurs when a student is added to a standalone roster without using the Teacher’s Utility disk. The internal student ID number is not the same as the one on the original computer.

One possible solution would be to modify the student ID in the Roster.dbf file to match what it was on the old computer. There are several caveats concerning this approach:

·         If more than one student is registered to the management system, the student Ids must be unique. No two students can have the same ID number in the Roster.dbf file.

·         Changing any of the other students’ ID will, consequently, prevent those students from accessing their problems from the floppy.

·         None of the students whose Ids are changing can be members of a group.

·         None of the other students whose Ids are changing can expect to retrieve work from their floppies under the newly assigned ID.

·         If the new student completed new work under the assigned ID, the same problem will occur when trying to access that work under the now altered ID.

The simpler and more straight-forward approach would be to have the student start the exercise all over again. Then next semester, help the teacher set up the class roster on the teacher station and use the Teacher’s Utility disk.
